Remove Bodies Of Water!
Looks more bad With Bodies Of Water on the map for Armoled display on Samsung mobile. More gray now not clean and good. More hard to see XM now.
Please remove it to next update. I have Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra with Exynos Armoled display and Android 12

I like the water, it makes thing much better visibly. However, roads and water bodies share the same grey tone, so maybe an adjustment to differentiate the two would be good. Maybe water needs a slight blue tinge or something.
Also, you can go into settings and adjust the contrast, that may help you.
I will have more clen picture and see black are black. Now are black more gray and looks more bad and more trublesome for my eyes when i have glassen.
Best if @NianticBrian relese we can Enable/Disable in settings. Good when some people will disable it and some people like it and enable.
If you put Dynamic lighting to it's darkest (all the way left), the water disappears
I'm really digging seeing the water
They must do it better to not make the picture quality more bad and gray. My samsung QN90A TV kan do it when the sun light on my TV and not make my TV more gray. Take look how good Samsung do all colors when sun light direct on the screen. @NianticBrian
Get used to it.
It is only a minor thing.
I love the water! It helps exploring and knowing what's around me!
Also, I plan out my drone's path on the Intel map (which always showed water) - but then the drone itself didn't see the water. It's much easier now, to orient the drone and explore with the drone.
I like the water being on the map, but I don’t think it was a thing that should have been added over other requested items.
Displaying bodies of water is critical for ingress players. We are sometimes so addicted to the gameplay that we may not even notice how we have every chance of drowning, getting lost in a dense forest, and even starving to d.e.a.t.h. I also propose to map green areas, places where you can recharge your smartphones for free, and places where you can eat and drink. Oh, and don't forget to put on the map the police departments where you can complain in case of an attack by a player from the opposite faction))).
I really like having water marked but I think the current visual design is egregiously ugly for large bodies of water. Here's what the San Francisco Bay looks like right now as you're approaching Oakland.
Using the magic of photoshop I quickly mocked up a slightly bluer blue, which I think is much more intuitively water, and that isn't suggestive of the factional blue color. I personally find this more intuitive and visually appealing, although it might be even better if there was a very subtle texture.
greyish color doesnt look like water
That looks really nice, just a bit of background colour looks great. I think doing the same for parks/forests/reserves etc would also look good.
Also Niantic, I've noticed that you dont render bridges from OSM (only the car roads on them), this causes display issues where a bridge which doesnt accept cars is barely noticeable with these colours. For display purposes, rendering the bridge i think will look better.
@Breenzy Oh, interesting idea. I made a small fake park to test it out. I think something like that would work... it's a muted color that fits with the theme of the game, and although I did a lazy job of cutting out portals I think both stand out clearly enough against both the water and the park.
Love it, definitely needs to be muted.
Interesting thought with the colors for different features. Would that be possible to have as an Labs option?
I'm trying to remember if the layer was always similar to the special dark Google Maps layer from intel...would explain why it always had a lack of colors.
Niantic uses OpenStreetMaps the in-game map and Google Maps the Intel Map default layer due to licensing.
Yes I know but I was thinking of in terms of how throughout the years, the scanner used grey for various features of the map.
See if I can expand on this more, clearly. What if we had future tests with the map as an "Niantic Labs Innovations"? I think it might require a restart of the app to implement a different OSM layer.
Like what Hosette showed above with adding color - would adding the color provide a better experience while keeping to the intended theme of Ingress? Or does the whole "secret agent" theme not really work in today's environment? Maybe even ignore the deep questions and see if this change is a step to implenting an option for the OSM layers?
What's armoled? 😐
