Heck no, that would have to be the other way around. Get the latency/issues sorted and I'll think about re-instating CORE.

This morning it was blazing fast, but it's temporary. They should be able to make the game behave like that 99% of the time, until they do that I'm happy I dropped CORE and I'm not even thinking about getting it back.

Also cancelled the subscription tot that X-series, no way I'm paying another another dime. Some badges or whatever with the CMU I still have is all they're going to get. We're coming up on 3 YEARS of issues, I'm not confident they will ever fix it.

  • As a clarification, the choice for not replacing the servers at the end of 2019 had nothing to do with Covid.

They chose to work on new features that hadn't been added since 2015, instead of waiting another year while they rewrote the back end. So the AppEngine server core was put into a Compute container inside a wrapper, to allow it to be run for lower cost without having to rewrite the servers.

If they'd known about Covid and the long delay before we could get back out there, the decision might have been different. As it is, it probably needs to be reassessed now that we have gotten quite a slew of new features into the game, but the lag remains the biggest issue.

low cost servers was due to the price of the older better? so its about money they went to cheaper servers.... nothing to do with corona.

Not entirely, from 2018 until late 2019, there was an interface layer wrapper translating Json to Protobuf

The decision to move to lower cost servers early 2020 and work on new stuff was entirely due to covid-19.

Had the pandemic not hit, likely the new server code would have been taken precidence.

Going on from what Ofer2 explained.

Though there was significant discussions at that point in time just before covid-19 when the amount of time for the new server code to be done, meant that they chose to the lower cost servers and focus on new features. Covid-19 hit, and lower cost servers were fast tracked.

    @Grogyan

The decision to move to lower cost servers early 2020

In order to reduce the costs of our classic servers, we chose to move our servers out of a high-cost compute environment into a low-cost one instead.

    ...

All of the code for the changes have already been written and our team is currently focused on re-deploying the classic servers in this much more cost-friendly environment as well as evaluating the new impacts on the software side.

Posted in Feb 2020 after work had been begun, and before COVID was known to be a big impact. The decisions were made long before COVID.

Had the pandemic not hit, likely the new server code would have been taken precidence.

If they'd known they'd have a massive reduction in player load, I'd have said the new server code would have taken precedence.

I don't know, they decided to make a lot of kits for a "NL-1331 2020 tour" and anyone with a working brain could have seen it was something to just wait instead of supposedly printing them out - even at February 2020. You're trying to speak for Niantic when their decisions have gone against logic.

anyone with a working brain could have seen it was something to just wait instead of supposedly printing them out

Apparently you consider half the known world's governments to "not have a working brain" then. February. Not April. Even at the end of February, the US Government considered this to be something that was "going to go away". Cases didn't begin to rise until March.
