Ingress 2.101.3 Release Notes
in General
What's New
- We lightened the base map color to increase visibility and readability, added bodies of water to the Map screen to help orient Agents, and returned XM color to white. As part of this visual refresh, enabling Lighting Dynamics in Settings now has a more pronounced effect on the Map screen. We also rounded the edge of the visible map tiles instead of showing the raw edge.
- Fixed: Fixed a crash occurring on some Android devices.
- Fixed: Fixed an iOS 16-specific connection issue with Sony’s LinkBuds Series.

Why are the patchnotes on the AppStore different from what you are posting?
they don’t mention the link buds anywhere.
in any case, I’m getting the feeling niantic is just messing with us :>
nice and fast rollout for once already have the update
The App Store isn't the Ingress website? Ask @NianticThia and @NianticBrian. I'm just pasting what's on the Ingress page.
New map is great. A also want a gray background of the"sky" and in game menu.
I dont like the empty black space it looks weird how will this help ?? yeah its more visible now so on a sunny day it should help but the black borders looks just weird now
I think someone wanted to give a better feel or illusion of looking out towards the horizon.
The problem is that sky is black, just like the ground.
Black map outside seems to be not the best UI idea, but from what i see - now map will be seen well at daylight on IPS (especially low/mid tier) screens, maybe it's time to some DayGress not NightGress at last.
The black sky box is part of the sci-fi theme.
It's fine.
I am just hoping to tone down the roads. At full brightness they will be too much of a distraction. Judging by the patch notes, it is on a slider 👍
Flat Earthers rejoice in vindication.
Also, it's not the skybox that's black. They're placing down a hard black circle over the loaded tiles to force this curve within view.
The decision to make the map only visible at view range is really odd, especially given that portals can still be visible outside that range and it wasn't mentioned in the patch notes.
I hope a reason is given (🙄) or it's "fixed" in the next update.
This is just ugly.
It was mentioned that they changed it, but I have NEVER heard anyone complain about the square edges...
We also rounded the edge of the visible map tiles instead of showing the raw edge
So they did! Didn't read it closely enough :)
But yeah, Never had a problem with it trailing off to the screen edges, myself.
They just changed it for THIS update...
sorry that we're not in your beta group to comment
Uhm what are you talking about? It's in the release notes...
I have NEVER heard anyone complain about the square edges...
Yes?
Have you heard anyone EVER complain about the maps edges that would justify them rounding them?
Then I apologize for interpreting it wrong
I don't understand the round map view unless it would somehow help show why the drone only goes so far?
Dont worry about it. These things happen.
It's not only the droneview though, it's everywhere...
I would get them doing it to speed up rendering IF they didn't render anything outside it but they do.
At this point, it looks more like a startups first prototype of a map based game than a 10 year old game from a billion dollar company.
Wow, that reduced draw distance is pretty bad.
Just got the update. It is going to take some getting used to, same with the roads being a lot brighter than before, even with reducing the Lighting Dynamics
Yeah it’s pretty aweful 😅
That looks just broken
Yeah, there’s a lot I don’t understand about the choices niantic makes, but this one is just plain terrible. How any of the people implementing this didn’t think “this is a very bad idea” is beyond me.
From 2.97.1: "Niantic Labs Innovations is a new Settings menu category to house our advanced features and settings. The idea is to field test new features and suggestions..."
It's kinda backwards how uncontroversial, straightforward settings (refresh rate, nearby portal indicators) get put under "Innovations", and then features that actually need testing and refinement (rounded edges) get plopped in the game as-is, with no choice.
That’s not a feature though, it’s backwards progress. :>
There is no reason for this reduced draw distance.
My old S9 could easily handle the draw distance before, that's 4 years ago
I'd understand the change if they were doing it to reduce tile loading for data reduction, but the tiles are still loaded, and sometimes visible outside the ring.
They've literally just slapped a black ring down over the elements, which is why portals bleed through, because they're above the ground, but the map tiles, links and fields don't, because they're at ground level.
The map tiles are static mostly right? Aren’t they mostly cached? I understand Pokémon finally has an option to download sprites so they don’t get loaded all the time, a much better option if you ask me.
this change is silly.
I'm not sure how much Prime caches, but I remember that the old version of the game tended to not keep map tiles cached and loaded them as you moved, because you'd stilll occasionally get dropped tiles in places you regularly play.
This is what happens when the people building the game aren’t playing it or at least playing it enough to quickly see why something like this does more harm than good…
Similar to putting the option to buy xmps at the end of the XMP carousel. Anyone who plays would see that was a bad idea.
And frankly, whoever decided cheaper servers could be an option might be guilty of the same thing.
edit: or… not properly beta testing and/or listening to feedback from assumed beta testers…
The lower cost servers decision was made because of 2 factors
1). The sudden change to the Prime UI, caused a large proportion of the player base to permanently leave the game.
2) Covid-19 for 2 years with a lack of income was just a fast bleed of cashflow.
Depending on what happens after Epiphany Night Anomaly, and assuming that players join up to the core subscription (again)
There should be little reason left to be on slow compute servers.which would help us with the lag
