Idea: keep 90 second portal cooldown, reduce drop rate of heat sinks

A lot of agents, including myself, are appalled by the recent decison to increase portal cooldown times. In my view, it shows a complete disrespect for agents' time, and forces agents to wait around for long time in freezing rain, rushhour traffic and in front of strangers' houses. We have other things to do in our lives besides waiting for portals to cool down.

Active agents that participate in starbursts or build multilayer fields and complex structures like HCF will suffer most from this change. And Niantic has zero gain from the time that agents spent waiting for cooldown.

You don't always have a team to help with key farming, and you can't always put a heat sink because mod slots are often already filled. In ,many areas, portals are too far apart to walk between portals while waiting for cooldown.

90 seconds was a perfect time, just about enough to contribute one or two portal scans between hacks, and it allowed for quick burn-out with a very rare heat sink.

However, I find that I need fewer heat sinks since the 90 second cooldown was introduced. Also, the possibility to link under fields reduces the necessity to farm multiple keys of the anchors or 3 keys for each portal of the spine.

What do you think of the idea to keep the 90 second cooldown, but halve the drop rate of heat sinks?

I have an an abundance of Heatsinks, and can easily get more if needed.

The current drop rate of them is fine.

What isn't though is the 90sec cooldown.

While Ingress does need to revert back to 5 minutes, the 3minute cooldown that is being made permanent is a great compromise.

Of course I want to keep the 90sec cooldown. But I've put my feelings and opinions aside, to see the bigger picture

  • You know a Heat Sink exists?

When you go to make use of a portal, there is a trade off you need to make.

    Shields/Fa/Tur or hack mods.

The point of the regular cooldown is to force the player into making a choice between the two (or a middle ground of 1 each), which is why Niantic made the change to 2 mods when it was initially 4.

With a 90s cooldown, you are very correct, heatsinks are basically worthless, but thats the problem, we shouldn't be defaulting to always putting shields down, we need to make that decision.

And just a reminder, its #AdventuresOnFoot not #AdventuresByCar

If you are driving between portals, and don't like the longer cooldown, use heatsinks.

And if your playstyle is not based on playing on foot, we have heatsinks!

    Just like I said!

The main area I micro field is the downtown area of a suburb. Pre-Pandemic before the changes. I'd often drive through the town and pre-hack the area the night before micro fielding and build up a cache of keys so I wouldn't have to stand around waiting. This change will just cause this to occur if I decide to start trying to micro field again (already have wings on Mind Controller). But if I do, I will just drive around and pre-hack the night before for keys. Then hack what I don't have the day of. I will still use a ton of heat sinks. I tend to keep a decent stock of them. Used them heavily for the past 2 years when fielding. (ie never stopped using them due to a 90 second cooldown)
