I played 430 days with 5 min cooldown. Many good experiences where I could walk between portals and even visit uniques, some bad experiences in rain, snow and standing in front of strangers' houses. Mod slots were often full, so heat sinks were not always an option.
My 921 days with 90 sec cooldown were so much better: just as many nice experiences and zero negative. If you walk at 3.6 km per hour, it takes 80 seconds to cross the 40+40m scanner range, only 10 more seconds wait to get a second hack. For portals which are not on my main route and require a detour to reach them, I would make portal scans while waiting 90 sec (or less with heat sinks). Nice thing about the 90 sec cooldown is you can stay fully focussed on ingress and don't switch to other apps in between.
I play 70% on foot, 20% on bike, 9% public transport, and 1% car.
The difference is the playerbase got softer the longer the cooldown was kept short, and now equate easy with better, and have decided to create their own challenges due to the ease and minimal challenge of "many keys, minimal opposition", and now those "self created challenges" are far far harder with a longer cooldown.
Did you ever experience having police check you because other persons reported you standing outside their houses? Must be awful standing out there underneath the rain. snow, bugs, and mosquitoes with that 5-minute cooldown.
I experienced all of the above except the snow. A police checked on our group to see if we are ok after we took his group's anchor down. Told him we were playing PoGO. He told us to take down the blue gym afterward :)
So, I don't know if the brussel sprout thing is true. Even if it technically is, I wouldn't exactly lean into it as an argument to keep 90 sec cooldown. It sounds tinfoil and just provides fodder to those against 90 sec cooldown. I think the pro-90 sec argument wins on the merits without going there.
There were MANY more intriguing arguments against the upcoming change in several other threads. Although not surprising, it's still a shame that Niantic has said nothing.
RE: brussel sprouts and alfalfa crop, it is very much technically true, however it was added for more of a sensible chuckle as the original post was intended to be.
Fodder for those against the 90 second cooldown. Nobody has made any viable argument anywhere.
It’s almost comical. Anyway, even same faction people argue about it, niantic is creating discourse everywhere and are shining in absence as well. My ingress care cup is almost empty, and judging by the activity in my and neighboring cells, others are feeling the same way.
You're idea of driving to another portal while waiting on the cool down for the first portal is so much worse. At least before people will be done at the portal in like 15 minutes and will most likely turn engine off and wait, now they are double that then they will drive round more.
It isn't, it's only a small set of older players wishing for the old days that say its easier. Faster hack time does not make easier, it makes it more dynamic. Slower speed means boredom, so unless you think boredom makes it harder (which is true I suppose) and should be encouraged, then your faster = easier argument is just not true. It's your opinion at best and that just means you have a really narrow minded and bad opinion
And this next bit is just all wrong because it's based on your bad opinion. People want the game to be faster so they can actually play more, not wait about bored out their mind for portals to allow hacking. Your argument that this is good will never be right, because your basing it completely om your bad opinion. There were several reasons why the lower cooldown was good, there has never been a good reason for why it isn't, other than grougans ludicrous attempt to say time limits helped yugioh and mtg (despite them being introduced to make games faster) and the frankly more ludicrous opinion of " the game is easy" which just isn't true
Had police turn up at house once. We got license plate reported for being 'suspicious' at a drug dealing spot. (Which we did not know was a drug dealing spot). Three police. Two instantly glazed over when we explained and wanted to leave, but one started carrying on about terrorism and scaring residents and was basically a PITA. Hilarious really, we're a couple in our 50s. Also got asked by police what I was doing at a "dogging spot" (which I knew was on). Explained and he laughed n drove off.
On cool down... The greenhouse damage from the inane arguments over this are probably more damaging!
I think it's irrelevant to a point. Ingress had peak player numbers, with tons of action at 5 minute cool down, for years.
Since just before Prime released, there has been a steady decline in the player base. The short cool down came out during COVID lock downs, (I'm unsure why, if you are stuck at home long cool down would be better surely?).
Personally, I think the shorter cool down time was a tad too short and 5 minutes is a tad too long. I quite like the current time.
Everyone's experience here will be different depending on portal density, controlling faction and your play style.
If you are desperate for keys, buy a fracker and chuck a VRHS on and a VRMH.
Congratulations, you repeated an absurd claim with different words.
You can be upset. But don't make up absurd baiting arguments about environmental damage while driving a gas-guzzling US vehicle. If you care that much, don't drive an internal combustion vehicle. If that means not playing Ingress, either you care more about Ingress than the environment, or your argument is intentionally faecetious.
We were supposed to get a lot of portal keys from that anchor because of the CD hack time, but talking to the police and pretending to play PoGo stopped it. Needless to say, I found out who he was, and it was nice to know he's such a good sport by checking on us and suggesting we take his gym too...lol. Wished we stayed longer there because it would have been fun battling against him and doing his banner missions too. Who knows we might drop by his turf again :)
If the portals are 1-15 miles apart, as they are often here in the beautiful Coachella Valley, it's a horrible suggestion to go back and forth. Even in an electric car - do you even know HOW that electricity is generated here in the US?
So no, driving back and forth between portals is NOT environmentally sound and the hack cool down should NOT be changed.
It is our jobs as both agents of Ingress and shepherds of the land to discourage this kind of reckless disregard for potentially harming our environment.
It is our jobs as both agents of Ingress and shepherds of the land to discourage this kind of reckless disregard for potentially harming our environment.
In order to effectively achieve this, in the environment you have described, you either need an electric car with solar charging at a home location.
OR
Stop playing Ingress.
The fact that you're claiming that the straw that broke the environmental camel's back is extending cooldowns, just shows how faecetious the argument is. If you cared about the environment more than Ingress, you wouldn't play Ingress where you have to drive back and forth.
do you even know HOW that electricity is generated here in the US?
You live near the worlds largest solar concentrator molten-salt generator in the world.
Then where the **** were you for the previous nine years. You can shepard your attitude off a damn mountain because if you really actually cared you would be informing people, not saying people are wrong about X and y like they should know what the latest environmental friendly methods even are. You would also be boycotting any anomaly because of air travel haha.
That's where informing people starts - local. It's why even trying to apply to anything regional is a legal mess because policy is the first start to that process.
Now you're getting it! This is EXACTLY why limiting the time you're idling in a vehicle at a portal is important!
@NianticBrian@NianticThia This is an open and shut case - do NOT increase the portal cool down. Bad for the environment, bad for our Australian comrades' mental health, bad for Ingress.

I played with 5 min cooldown for over seven years. Who cares now anyway.

Got it! So you're saying that:
1. The dwindling player base has changed.
2. The current player base doesn't want the change.
3. Increasing the cool down will have a negative impact on the game for the current player base.
Thank you for supporting our arguments - and I'm glad we're finally in agreement that @NianticBrian needs to stop this change ASAP.
Did you ever experience having police check you because other persons reported you standing outside their houses? Must be awful standing out there underneath the rain. snow, bugs, and mosquitoes with that 5-minute cooldown.
I'll adapt and use portals that are in reach of a café with snacks and refreshments. Maybe I'll nominate my favorite café as POI.
Have you considered not making entirely bad faith arguments? It's honestly pathetic. You're like a child throwing a tantrum in a public place.
Do better.
I experienced all of the above except the snow. A police checked on our group to see if we are ok after we took his group's anchor down. Told him we were playing PoGO. He told us to take down the blue gym afterward :)
Exactly. Longer Cooldown times encourages you to move more to get more keys in the same time. i.e. longer cooldown times are better for your health :)
Just here to have a healthy community conversation about a bad product decision.
I'm sorry that I've struck a nerve, let me know if you need anything ;)

Many people are quite upset about the 90 sec being changed to 180/300sec
My perspective is if 180 is a problem then 90 is likely to also be a problem.
In those cases when time is tight then two heatsinks are your friend. My favourite combo is hack, RH, hack, RH, hack [wait if needed hack]
On portals where the mod slots are full then maybe the field plan needs adjustment or a flip could be used.
(Aside) Catan (loved that game!!!) Had this amazing double mod giving 10 instant hacks. Was super fun!
But "Longer cooldowns will destroy the environment" is a brilliant observation right? Ah huh.
Actually, OP said "to an increase in harmful environment-damaging green house gases".
Which is even more reason for Niantic to *NOT* change the hack cool down :)

I didnt say it was, in fact, I said it was wrong, but I said your argument of driving round was worse
The environmental impact of a longer cooldown is so irrelevant that driving to another portal is completely negligible in this case.
So yeah, drive to another portal because if you're already playing Ingress in a ICE car, the environment is the least of your concerns.
Thanks again for bolstering my points.
