what does this mean?
in General
the release notes for 2.98.1, under "What's New", says
- <<Added Nearby Portal Indicators to Niantic Labs Innovations. Enabled by default, Agents can optionally disable Nearby Portal Indicators from displaying on the Map screen via the bottom of the Settings menu.>>

Niantic Innovations is just the name of a few settings/options.
At the bottom of the settings menu, a few options have been added.
In the previous release (2.97), they added a switch for native refresh mode.
In this release they added the option to disable the nearby portal indicators
Thank you.
It amuses me that an "innovation" is the ability to turn off a feature, presumably because it was annoying some people.
I wish they'd "innovate" some more and let me turn off their low contrast color scheme in favor of something we can actually read in daylight.
We can only hope that rainbow xm will have a similar checkbox.
I'll take the checkbox that says "Give me back my original purple-white proper XM colour instead of the urine-white we have".
I think the difference in the features labeled "innovations" is that they can be changed by Niantic at any time, which implies that they have someone working on development/coding for the feature. Usually these are called "experimental features" but it's obvious that someone fluent in marketing-speak got ahold of the terminology.
The nearby portals popups have been broken for a while, often showing portals for which you have inventory keys that are hundreds of km away instead of pulling the closest two portals from intel as was intended. That's why so many of us have been asking for the ability to disable them.
I'd like an option to disable the latency. :@
Just let us buy XM colours with CMU, could have rainbow all year if you wanted or red/white/green for Christmas colours etc.
