How much longer Ingress won't be detecting disabled location services?
This simplest form of cheating has been here since release of Prime. Is it so hard to detect when location services gets disabled? I'm sick of observing how a person uses a public transport, rides on a bridge, and uses this to take down fully shielded portal, deploy it with mods and even link from it - all without the transport even stopping and riding more than a kilometer while this is happening. When will this stop?

If you suspect someone of spoofing open a ticket to report them.
Somewhere couple years ago I was in a public transport bus with another agent. We passed a portal, were 600 meters away from it at that point and he was STILL doing things to the portal. I reported this to support. Guess what happened? Nothing :) I think I can still find screenshots of him saying in comm that "everyone knows this trick and uses it, don't play fool".
If I was to report every occasion of someone switching off location services and abusing them staying on the location of switch off, I would have reported half of city agents. And it still wouldn't result in a ban. This needs to stop via Prime's code. While there's a possibility for abuse, and mind you so simple abuse - you don't need root, 3rd party apps, developer tools, nothing but what comes with your phone, - it will be abused.
I thought it was a lot harder to disable location now?
It used to be a **** off, **** on ease but now I thought Ingress whined? (I could be wrong).
Well, I've said it before in other topics, I can't believe they 'allow' this on only certain devices. As far as I know, not all android phones have the ability to 'GPS lock'.
However, I know agents on both factions abuse this 'feature'. As an iOS user, I just don't understand. How can you say you want to fight cheating, but at the same time don't make it impossible to 'lock' yourself in place for 3-5 minutes.
It was already possible with redacted, and I've reported players many times, but it doesn't matter.
Nope, it's still that easy. I even know of players that walked for miles without any portals in range, and still scanned the whole way because of GPS lock at one portal. :x I mean how easy is it to detect that!
the client needs to be more aggressive for weak or no gps lock then
Report form is 90% useless waste of time only to adress frustration and/or anger.
Not only, but this too. As an example, now no checks about "magisk" or "twrp" files, also ingress never prompted about "all-sources-location" (like as an example witcher hunt does). Also there should be a way to turn off overlays (or how that is called)(it will break glyph predictor but also cheat tools). A way to check if it is mobile or emulator,a way to test app integrity, etc etc
So do you think it's a bug that disabling location works despite they kind of fixed this some time ago? Maybe worth opening a bug report then
Well I follow a lot of news channels on TG, read up on stuff on the forums and check reddit. I've never ever seen any comment about preventing GPS lock. They ignore reports, don't reply to support/email regarding it, and they're absent on the forums.
So how do we know they ever addressed it? As far as I know, it has never been impossible, although I don't know what the requirements are android version/phone wise.
I dont want to try it now. I do think it requires more messing around to do it now but I could be wrong. S21 here.
From my understanding, Ingress looks at if the device has a hardware GPS. It looks like location permissions are done through Google Location Services. It used to be android.location:
If I turn GPS off on my phone while running Ingress I get a big popup saying "no location services" and if I click outside the popup the scanner goes to "inaccurate location, scanner disabled" mode.
If I turn location services off on my phone while running Ingress, I freeze on a position for at least 10 seconds (I didn't try more) with the ability to perform any actions like usual.
Exactly. It should be “no location services” on all devices the second GPS is disabled. I have no idea what the criteria are to have this “feature”, but it completely crazy it’s possible.
