Ok I'm sure they weren't actually taken there, but why are the GPS points there? If XMPS are finished, can't they just delete them? Anyway, it's funny to think of them buried in ice, and found by alien archeologists 100s of years in the future!🤣
Sounds like they are removed from the physical location. The only thing I can imagine why it's not deleted is because they use an API. Better to not remove the API functionality from the unit if it's going to be placed somewhere else.
They are moved there because if a portal is deleted, every agent who has keys to that portal loses them. That happened to the NL-1331 portal once and Niantic had to go through a special process to restore the lost keys in everyone's inventory.

They are stored,
A) so they can be reused
B) the keys remain active in inventory, there are a number of event portals stored there...

Most of the portals from Camp Navarro got relocated to Antarctica as well... Niantic seems to use that area as a holding pen for special portals. There's a big cluster of them near here: https://intel.ingress.com/intel?ll=-82.862379,134.971717&z=17&pll=-82.862379,134.971717
They should stack them all on point nemo
Antarticas less accessible...

Osaka one appears to be in place still?
Can anyone post a link that works to show the portals in the scanner?
Here you go. This is the one @Hosette posted the Intel link to earlier.
