What if there were “trusted editors”?

What if agents with 10,000+ agreements could become “trusted editors” and their edits would require no/a few reviews to get processed?

Do you think it would be abused or could this system work? Portal edits take way too long and can’t be upgraded (yet, hopefully); something needs to change.

  • I do support this, but with caution and restrictions. Like for example, let's say at least 5 "trusted editors" needs to review a candidate, for it to conclude it's final decision.

  • I would rather do the other way around: if you are found submitting fake portals, abusive descriptions or edits, or abusing the OPR tools in any way (including spamming the system with submissions of the same location) you should be permanently banned from the Operation. The system is currently overloaded with submissions that don't reflect the main objective of this game, exploration ("It's time to move") and if the POI are lame, Ingress turns into a tap tap tap ruzzle game, you know.... So yeah, it would be great if there was an "OPR Avantgarde": quality before quantity, that would be a dream. But I think it shouldn't be based on your score.

Giving people power like this is dangerous. Even the most ethical and integer people have enemies and fights. It will be abused.

  • @Jo0Lz Isn't OPR abused already? A small group of trusted editors would be more manageble that thousands of questionable reviewers. But I don't think it would be the best solution anyway....

Statistically, I think many people with few powers are more reliable than a few people with a lot of power.

With many people all the same, an impartial and just judgment should be more likely.

    "Virtual democracy".

  • I cautiously would like to see something similar to this. I also fear abuse... but how much abuse is possible with title and description edits? It's not like those could impact the game-play for other agents, so the only risk is of inappropriate edits making it through. And how likely is someone who has spent so much time reviewing to risk their status on allowing someone to put a really stupid or insulting description on a portal? The majority of title edits are simple spelling/grammar changes. The majority of descriptions are simply adding a description, or better description to a portal that had none. Location edits I think should be handled differently, keep those in OPR perhaps, but add an option to give an explanation and supporting photo. Spelling/grammar fixes? We need SOMEONE actually doing these in a way that doesn't take 10 months and time from 100 different agents just to add a comma that was accidentally left out. Any system that involves players approving the edits should also add a system to report abuse. People should be able to report abusive edits and those involved in putting in the abusive edits should lose their ability to do so.

Title and description is not the issue here. It's the fact that one "trusted" editor would be able to move portals, that would be an issue. I'll move portal x a few meters so portal Y can become a pokestop. They're already revamping Editing and OPR, let them tweak and make improvements without drastic changes like "trusted" editors. What if those people become inactive? What if they get banned? Abuse? Would normal OPR stop reviewing edits? So many factors....

  • And that's exactly why I feel that title and description edits should be treated differently from location edits. There is no reason that both types of edits have to, or should, be handled the same way.

The location edits currently are a joke! It's very difficult as a reviewer to tell the difference between an edit where someone is trying to move a portal off the correct location to make a Gym, one where there are really multiple locations that are equally valid but one is preferred for the cell placement, and one where the portal is legitimately in the wrong spot. People here have started submitting fake description edits as the only way to include a comment along with their portal move request just to try to help reviewers, because otherwise, much of the time, the location edits simply float around with OPR being unable to tell which is the better spot, much less why. We really need to have location edits done like prime submissions along with a supporting photo and statement. I feel like many Ingress players reject all location moves out of hand, when many of them are being entered for the betterment of both games.

We NEED an easier and more efficient way to get title and description edits through the system. The current system simply is not working and it's just stupid that there is so much hassle involved in changing a description like the typo I recently made that should have been "Bearnard De Lafayette" and instead, in the hot sun, I typed "Bearard De Lafayette" for a silly french bear statue. That typo will likely haunt me for years, and there is no excuse for that. Whether we use "trusted editors" or simply reduce the number of reviewers needed to approve text edits, or offer rewards for doing them or have Niantic Ops hire someone to just click and approve them like additional photos or some combination of the above, we need a better process.

  • I can see abuse here too. Make trusted editors out of Pokemon Go players only that way there is no faction bias. Sounds crazy but I see so many portal edits in Guam where they try and throw strong anchor portals into the Mariana's trench.

Pokemon players are the ones doing stupid edit of few meters just to pop an arena..

  • I agree, but I don't think nia will take such a step. Because they gave us the OPR.

giving more power to OPR people is not good, niantic should address stuff like any professional company would do, and i am speaking about everything around OPR at this point is a non-reliable system in any kind of resolution

  • And Ingress-only players keep moving portals to break links or making their anchors inaccessible. Also Ingress-only players are the ones who reject valid portal submissions just because they don’t want to advantage the opposite faction.

People here talk about not giving too much power to certain players, but all Ingress reviewers already have too much power, on THREE Niantic’s games.

Please be honest a small fraction of players from all games abuse the edit feature and yes I have seen fraud from ingress agents trying to make it hard for other agents to access a portal. Some times these supposed meter edit do they hurt gameplay if someone is moving the pin on top of the POI? Also generalizing a statement about PoGo players is wrong there is a lot more agents that play both games submitting that do it properly. Trying to call out an entire games players not only hurts your cause but makes you seem biased.

This another reason no on trusted edittors. People are still submitting portals on military bases. I do not think agents follow the guidelines fully especially with placement of athletic courts and I have heard agents are still approving portals on base.
