What is considered harassment?

Apart from the obvious such as threats on COMM and direct aggressive interaction in the field, where is the line between normal competitive play, and harassment/bullying lay? I have a player that constantly undoes my work, fast and targeted... but I do it back to him to a lesser degree.. it's an uphill struggle for me due to the huge difference in screentime between us, but I mostly consider that sort of tit for tat to be inline with the intended gameplay. However that same player voraciously targets a small player in his own turf, never letting him hold an inch, almost 24/7. The player feels so targeted, as his growth is so stunted due to not being able to gain AP in the KM² of his home area, he wants to quit (and it seems that's the other players main goal, it's worked for him before I've heard.)

What's the general opinion. Is that just the game, does he have to play 24/7 over a 10 km² area too to win, or is power harassment against the rules. I know it's a war out there, but still...

  • For me, harassment starts when actions take place outside the game.

If they are playing the game and not interacting with you outside the game, that's not harassment.

  • Yeah same here. Harassment is any activity outside the scanner. If you put down the scanner, other players should not be continuing to affect you.

e.g. Sitting outside someone's house not playing, just waiting for them to do something.

What about tailing someone? It's a bit of a "How long is a piece of string"

If it's occasional and at a distance, OK. If it's all the time and following almost bumper to bumper that's harassment.

Depends if it makes you uncomfortable/feel unsafe.

Turning up in your "home" area every day for weeks and leveling it - not really harassment, but hard play.

@undeaddan Nope, that's just the game played. This situation can actually be advantageous for you, as you will always have something to do and points to gain whenever you please. In this situation, it is you who decides when the game starts. If you concern yourself with MU's, just pick some portals with loads of fields and destroy them near a checkpoint.

    Some suggestions:

You could try to pick a slightly larger area than his playing ground, and pull a field over it.

You could try to pick 2 faraway points on either side and block some of his area with links.

You could try to learn his patterns; if you notice he reacts slowly or not at all at certain times of certain days, that's the time to strike.

You mention a second player. Coordinate your actions with that player. You'd be surprised what you can achieve if you work together.

If I were you, I'd ignore the rumors that he is out to push people off the game, and just go about your own business.

These are all good tactics that I have considered or attempted. Syncing attacks had especially worked well.

The problem is Kyoto has 1000s of portals, close together, over a wide area, it's very difficult to cut through the grass and create really effective distruptive links.

I have learned the player pattern too, I have a window between 5am and 7 am. The rest of the time they're are either in the field or watching the phone. I'm not even exaggerating, too be honest even 7am is touch and go!🤣

My next tactic, after I finish this recurse, is to recurse again, change faction, and then leave really annoying portals and links in the players areas that the player can't destroy 🤣

    Sorry. Mistake!

Some people play the game some people play the player, everyone has various levels of free time. Admittedly some people take it too far.

@undeaddan Changing faction just to start annoying a previous adversary is in my opinion against the spirit of the game and would also hamper your own team's efforts, I would reconsider that.

If I look at Kyoto (and the places where you have portals captured) I don't see one dominating faction by the way.. it looks kinda mixed and balanced. Remember that undoing someone's work is actually one of the game's goals and a good source of personal AP.

I have been followed, NUMEROUS times. Sometimes people are friendly, sometimes they're just downright creepy. Smile, introduce yourself, complement good gameplay, don't argue. These actions I respond well to. When people come at me aggressively, the best thing to do I've found is simply withdraw.

This game has taught me many things. The saddest of these to me are, how to spot a tail, how to lose a tail, and how not to get cornered without an exit.

  • Oh we all have, but it's still harassment, even if people are blasé about it.

The problem I have over and over is the undoing part. The player that scourges the centre of Kyoto can take any portal away from you in seconds even while you hammer the charge button. In reverse he had hold the portal indefinitely, and defends almost immediately. I've tried many times to communicate this niantic and ask for an explanation. But of course they just ignore.

if u feel agent play unfair and not legit u need report them and explain why.

The only players who can really define "harassment" in Ingress are Niantic's employees. So if you really want to know what constitutes punishable harassment, you'll have to **** one of them until Niantic punishes you. QED.

Someone get on that and let me know how it goes for you.

I don't think it would matter. It's the wild west in this game. Niantic don't seem to much attention.
