I don't think color has been adjusted for the Silver, Platinum, and Onyx badges; it's just copied and pasted which can be completed in under 60 seconds. Just like the bots manning the Help Support.
maybe for this month it will be just 6 mission, and later on they can change to something else and not just do x missions each month that would be boring doing exactly the same for mission day badge and start over again for whatever the tiers will be for highest..
Most of the mission banners near my location are too cartoonish and juvenile. Gone are banners that serve to teach and give nod to historical sites. It seems the standards of approving missions have been lowered.
Most banners were never that educational to begin with, but it has gotten worse lately, especially with agents spamming the map with the same dumb banners in multiple regions. New players are going to wonder "Why are these people so obsessed with toast?"
I am already paying Niantic for the CORE subscription. Why would I do free labor when I have a profession IRL? If I create a mission banner, Niantic needs to pay me by the hour.
It's not only cartoonish and juvenile mission banners that fail to showcase the cultural and historical sites in those certain portals that are sprouting around but portals nominated by players which lack cultural and historical value. So, no use in emphasizing that point when it comes to exploration when encouraging new players to take this game. What's next? A mission banner of "My Little Pony character like Twilight Sparkles? "
Creating missions has always been a local effort. Niantic isn't going to be the one who will know the history and culture of any given place. Even in the past, they had POC (people of contact) to provide information for missions for any Mission Day. It's frankly a thankless job.
You don't have anyone in your local chats that designs any banners? The effort doesn't have to be put all on yourself.
Since Ingress Prime is Niantic's game, effort and owning the responsibility of creating missions needs to be done by Niantic and its employees especially when we pay for subscriptions in this game. Why exploit other agents/players? Niantic has been outsourcing the following to players: (1) creation and approval of portals/pokestops; (2) missions/mission banners; (3) obtaining photos of portals/pokestops; and (4) portal scanning with little or no reward at all. What's next? outsource Help Support to volunteer agents as well? Niantic is a for-profit organization and not 501 (c) (3) organization.
The content you are complaining about is all player contributions. It always has been since the start of Ingress a decade ago. It's literally what crowdsourcing information is about.
Oh yeah, outsource tasks to volunteer players with no or little incentives. Avoid "owning" responsibilities tied up to the game created by Niantic. However, collect the monthly CORE Subscription from players to pay 6 figure salaries of your employees. Nice! Thank goodness for Ziprecruiter where one can see all that salary range ;)
Nice advice to apply to yourself. Happy New Year to you too ;) I wonder if you are the one managing the CORE subscription and giving yourself a six-figure salary. Hmm... I believe I was closer to the truth that I rattled some feathers here. Crowdsourcing tasks may have worked a decade ago or at the start of Ingress, but things change and persons don't work for free and need to be compensated fairly. I believe if Niantic wants to attract and retain clients; it needs to seek from within what it needs to change starting its culture.
Crowdsourcing is what has provided Wikipedia, Google Maps data, OpenStreetMap, and Waze traffic data. This is anything but old and the idea predates Niantic.
Still, it is vulnerable to exploitation since it is a source of free labor, just like portal scanning out there. No wonder, the new missions made nowadays are done in a fast or copied and paste-like manner. Recently saw mission banners from different states with identical toast artwork. At least Niantic needs to give those Mission banner authors some compensation for the time and work they do. The same can be said to the new Second Sunday Medal wherein there is hardly any distinction between the Silver, Platinum, and Onyx badges.
Even if you were being sarcastic, this is an excellent suggestion, and I would enjoy it. Unfortunately, since many phones aren't compatible with scanning, it wouldn't be fair to make it the basis of a full Second Sunday. But if the requirements allowed submitting new portal photos, then it would work well.
They want to make Second Sunday more about other activities than simply doing six missions (hopefully because Mission Days are coming back!), so we need to suggest more things that could be used in place of missions.
I Understand that, and thought of it myself as well, but I wouldn't expect the number requirement to be very high. 6 scans/photos for the day seems likely? Possibly a few more.
When the announced an event called "See with New Eyes" just before most of us got hit with lockdowns, I was guessing it was going to be a scan/photo event.
What he doesn't get is that you don't create missions/banners for Niantic...you create them for your fellow players. Do or don't do it...but complaining that doing so is somehow providing free labor to Niantic is nonsense...they're not asking you to do it...they honestly could not care less whether you do it or not.
He's equating the portal scanning to the other contribution items which isn't exactly a fair comparison.
Submitting portals? Optional.
Creating missions? Optional.
Doing portal scans? Optional.
I have always enjoyed exploring and finding out history about stuff I didn't know about. I always want to share that knowledge to the network so people can venture about it.
The original missions back in 2014 made me expand upon that and it's interesting to think Mission Days kind of focus on that exploration. I kind of wish mission banners didn't become the norm in a way because it seemed like the focus switched to powering through, getting them done versus enjoying the moment. At the same time thorough, I can appreciate the work that has been done with banners. Kind of wished the missions API acknowledged banners just to make it seemless in game.
However, portal scans does not have an immediate return to the network. I would love to see what the scanning does regardless if it can be shown as a demo locally versus the server implementation.
@NianticOfficial@NianticThia Heyo. Any info you can share about the medal tier requirements for the new Second Sunday medal? This Sunday is SS and we're feeling anxious. 😜
Api improvements are likely, but its chicken and egg, best we can hope for is doing more missions, so missions are more visable to the decision makers.....

Well, I hope everyone who asked for a new medal enjoys their future "Portal Scanning Sunday" assignments.
I don't think color has been adjusted for the Silver, Platinum, and Onyx badges; it's just copied and pasted which can be completed in under 60 seconds. Just like the bots manning the Help Support.
Yip, missions where getting boring.....

You really don't get it at all.

You really never have anything positive to state on here. I'm trying to see why you even bother.
I didn't know you are referring to yourself :)
Now you're just being pathetic.
Anyways, if you want change - you have to seek it from within. :)

First reaction was that this sounds good, but when thinking more, it may not be so good idea.
Players motive may be more about number of new photo submissions and new Medal instead of better portal photos.
It will just add more load to Wayfarer reviewers and new photos may not be any better than the current ones.
If Niantic can somehow figure out and mark portals that needs better photos (like scout volatiles) then it may make sense.
If mission banner authors thought they were getting scammed or something, they just wouldn't do it.
I make banner sets because I want to. I am not being forced to do it.
The reward is the banner.
I Understand that, and thought of it myself as well, but I wouldn't expect the number requirement to be very high. 6 scans/photos for the day seems likely? Possibly a few more.

Grrr. i was only 2 ticks away from Onyx Mission Day...

Mission Day isn't going anywhere

Guess you don't want a forever bronze???
I would expect simular to IFS but its still a mystery....
I'll be participating regardless, even it it is just a bronze forever on profile :)
Api improvements are likely, but its chicken and egg, best we can hope for is doing more missions, so missions are more visable to the decision makers.....
