That definitely sounds like there aren't enough cell towers around. You should ask your provider for details about upgrading their network.

A portable hotspot with an external omni antenna would definitely help.

Been in places like this, which why we typically use those Portals as strategic anchors.

@Anderor all you need is a camera in your mobile to scan wayspots.

Upload them later at home. Unless you have a real budget mobile, which many have. It does not make any sense to buy budget devices when most mid range devices today work as well as a 2yr old flagship, or buy a 2yr old flagship.

Well, he did mention there was one 'most important thing':

And most importantly, people are quite uncomfortable running around the city and scanning the objects so that people do not look at what they are trying to do. Or wait an hour for the space around the portal to empty so that there are no people in the scan.

Which I agree with. Scanning for ~30 seconds is too long for most portals, and forces you to just 'film some surrounding' which is off putting when you are in a city or when it's crowded. I can't imagine more than 10% is actual scans of portals, the rest is scans of pavement, bushes, walls, etc.

AR is a gimmick, without glasses, nobody is EVER going to use it, just like nobody uses it in that other game.

You also need battery life and memory in your phone, you need not to mind behaving in what most people would consider a best an odd or at worst a creepy and suspicious way, and most importantly you need to believe that it's worth doing. I've done enough scanning to get a few badges, because it was very quiet during covid, but I now regret assisting Niantic to head down the AR dead-end.

If we'd all just said no right at the start, they wouldn't be wasting their efforts on it and would have been able to devote their efforts towards making the game playable.

  • WOuld be good for ingress to introduce a restricted list that when portals added to them, they would not be linkable in either direction, handy for restricted military & higher governament related portals that impact gameplay on a regular basis

Think like card games (Magic, Yugioh) with their Forbidden/Limited lists.

    Thoughts, @NianticThia?

I usually don't have that sort of problem.

Though I do not scan playgrounds when there are any children around, that's just creepy, super creepy.

Some ask what I am doing, my response generally is

Photogrammetry for an Augmented Reality Game.

    Which is true.

But the amount of techno babble in that sentence usually is the end of it, and carry on.

I just don't even bother waiting for an empty area, if it has people around it, just move on. There will be someone else sometime that may get a quality scan in.

One could argue you don't have to pay for the game and some portal scanning is fair payment. But yes on point.

@SSSputnik , make sure not to undervalue or underestimate the CMUs offered to the agents who do portal scans considering all the resources they have to use out there to do tasks that Niantic's employees should do. Otherwise, it will be called cheap labor which is considered a form of exploitation.

by now the cause should be identified and fixes should be implemented. Be like Deadpool on this, maximum effort. Nothing should take priority over this, especially because it has been a YEAR!

Yeah, portal key sorting has been broken since June 2019. Get in the queue...
