How do I activate AR in Ingress

I have the AR option checked, no option in game to flip to AR mode. Am I missing something?

Are you looking to scan portals in general or use the new Scan Mesh feature?

Scan meshing in Ingress is only supported by Android phones with Snapdragon CPUs with Adreno 640/650/660 GPU, and even then they have to be fairly modern phones to support scan meshing.

  • In comparison to Pokemon Go (Niantic’s other main game design), the AR option would come up and you can see it come to life in your own space via the screen. I was hoping to do the same with portals and the map display in the Ingress game, but didn’t see any option to do so, except I’m able to check off AR option in settings, and it’s the IOS version. Why have the option in IOS settings if it’s not usable. Slow rollout possibly? Thanks for the info that it’s only available in Android OS @ArkFang

The only way AR is currently used is in scanning Portals. Apple devices can also use the Lightship AR to enable Portal Scan Meshing if they fall under the following rules:

    • iPhone 8 to iPhone 12; excludes iPhone13 at this time
    • iOS 13 or higher

If you don't care about scanning portals however, you can ignore the setting, because as of right now, it is not used anywhere else.

The AR from the camera is coming, however there needs to be a lot of wayspot scanning.

Mesh scanning as mentioned above, is still limited to a number of devices.

If Ingress implemented the same AR camera feature, it wouldn't be very useful, however, imagine using the AR to look around the wayspot for a hidden cache, that is something that Brian Rose has mentioned as a value added AR.

Mesh scanning once fully implemented across many other devices.

That mesh scan data can be used for other games as well, Pokémon GO devs are looking at how to use it, and is already showing promise in various demo projects using the Lightship ARDK

To be fair, that's not too far off. Brian mentioned in that AR conference a while back that this was already playtested with the Vanguards and the XMAs, and the assets for it are in the app already. No idea how far off it is exactly, but it's closer then you may think.

Yeah, it must be fairly close, considering how he mentioned it like a year ago when Auckland was play testing with Rare BBs as a First Saturday option

  • Thank you for the explanation @InvestigateXM and @Grogyan
