Nemesis, the 3rd faction possibility?
What do you think on the possibility of a 3rd faction when the Nemesis saga is released post pandemic? I’m liking the 3rd faction idea a lot. Will make the game even more interesting. Imagine the behavioural science data that would emerge with the introduction of 3rd faction, if any of the data is collected for that purpose.

If you disagree, please discuss why. It’s a conversation after all
I like the 3rd faction too. We need the red faction!
Yes! 100% @GreenVam
third faction only as npc random infecting portals perhaps.
The main reason I like the idea of a third faction is that it could reduce cross faction toxicity as then the opposing factions wouldn’t always be thwarting your side. The other two factions would always be potential half allies.
But it’s also too easy to see it become a “runt of the litter” faction unless it’s maybe given some mix of unique abilities and limitations. Something that could coax a player to abandon their faction relationships.
Just brainstorming special powers and limitations for a red faction:
red portal resonators are made of blue and green XM energy so to be taken down they have to be attacked by both ENL and RES.
the balancing limitation being that Red portals decay much faster and/or can’t be recharged.
red bursters can attack green and blue resos but they do half damage (as they release a 50/50 mix green and blue XM).
red faction can throw links from blue to green or green to blue (but not blue to blue or green to green). I haven’t thought of a counterbalance to this yet but I find the idea interesting.
NPC agents could be useful, especially for areas with smaller playerbases. You could have an AI for different NEMESIS agents, with different playstyles.
Myriad: during the NEMESIS sequence, Myriad infected portals that required hacks to overcome. The Myriad AI could just capture 5-10 Portals in a given area, with some links between them.
Didact: during the NEMESIS sequence, Didact tried to destroy the ability to make control fields. The Didact AI could make its own fields up to 1 KM in any direction, which nullifies the MU total of other fields under it.
Lexicon: in the NEMESIS sequence, Lexicon invented a new rune system to bypass glyphs. The Lexicon AI could capture 5-10 Portals in a given area that have runes instead of glyphs when glyph hacked. Rune hacking provides a 200 AP bonus for hacking.
Avenir: in the NEMESIS sequence, Avenir travelled via shards. The Avenir AI could travel from Portal to Portal, linking back as it goes.
If NPCs were added, I'd want them to be implemented in a way that gives players new objectives and livens up the environment without messing up the game board for actual players.
The period for a potential came and went around 7 years ago.
An NPC 3rd faction is still possible, but it would have to be a story driven for it to work out.
Yet again, we haven't seen any tiny change from Niantic to even have this as an option
Would it be better not to nerf the 3rd faction's abilities instead of making it look like the runt of the litter? @mortuus, is it possible to go outside of the box wherein the usual premise that a 3rd faction's creation is just for npc's infecting portals?
there aren't enough player left for 2 faction, why would you want spread those left even more ?
I think the 3rd faction introduction in the game will generate renewed interest for those that stopped playing, and will also attract a lot if new players. There has to be more plot twist to the game than just drawing blue or green triangles on the map. As usual, players that don’t like change will not like the idea but will continue to play and realized how much fun it is learning the new game improvements and plot twists. This will also mean more medal introduction. It will also generate enthusiasm for those that embrace change. I think Niantic will find a fun creative way to implement it (most likely they already did).
It'll never happen. NIA has said this for years that it's not going to make one. If they were they would've made it shortly after the beta close because that's when Ingress player was huge and had everyone asking for a third faction.
