Can't leave notifications

I was out playing and shortly after shifting out of scanner, I got an invite to a group on Niantic social. I clicked on the system notification pop-up. That took me to the notifications. I joined the group I was invited to. At that point, my only options were to exit to the map or to exit ingress entirely. Exiting to the map and coming back in to social dumped me at notifications again. I no longer seem to have the right controls to switch to the discord-like interface.
