Is the portal discovered stat now retired with recent changes?

I received the first email today from niantic Wayfarer (no longer Ingress) about an accepted submission. The email reads:

... " Remember that not all accepted nominations will appear in all Niantic games (and may take up to 48 hours to appear). If this Wayspot is added to Ingress, then you will receive the Portal Key and 500 AP, and the Portal will be recorded as a unique Portal visit on your Agent Profile. Also, community rejected nominations are not final! These nominations may be appealed to Niantic one time via your Contribution Management"

And although I like the new email format ... it appears to me that a submission AP gained is now cut by 50% and also no longer counts as portals discovered?

Was this change announced or described anywhere before and I just missed that?

Does that make portals discovered effectively another dead stat?

  • This was mentioned in the bug report discussion tab weeks ago, and Niantic marked it as "Investigating" so if it is intentional that it's a retired metric, I would be a bit weird

So many good questions. As it is a Friday, we likely won't get any sort of update until next week sometime or you will have to find the answer on the wayfarer forums or even twitter. Best of luck. Communication is a struggle here and generally speaking, the changes happen without any sort of warning.

There is some ongoing stuff here in this thread... The wording makes one think the stat bug is a bug and should hopefully get fixed. The wording you posted could lead one to believe otherwise. Guess we'll see what they give us...

  • @ZeroHecksGiven yes I read that wayfarer community page after I noticed that my last 18 accepted submissions no longer counted towards the portals discovered metric. Sounded like 'under investigation' to me as @ApatheticAgent pointed out.

To be honest the AP is not really important ... although it is weird that after all the increased AP changes (65 AP for a single recharge, mods destroyed, apex, battle beacons etc) which basically made AP earning in ingress now like candy crush in comparison to the old days. That the only AP reduction I have seen is for the most important aspect of the original game idea. .... go out and move and explore agent. We should change the motto to "sit on your bum and charge agent" :-)

But the portal discovered one would be a real kick in the teeth for players who go out and explore and properly research new historical submissions and try to improve the portal network beyond memorial benches, playgrounds and trail markers. Bad enough that Seer was not replaced with something else reflecting portals discovered .... but stopping the metric is weird as you say. Especially since even existing guardian portals are still counting as far as I heard.

But as you say .... we will see what curve ball nia is throwing at us :-) Just wanted to keep this in the ingress community .... nothing to do with wayfarer and all the PoGo players discussing how to squeeze in another Pokestop between the slide and the swings on any given playground.

The page I linked is here in the forums.

my reference to wayfarer is that different people are communicating relevant things in different areas. Something relevant to Ingress should be shared here just as well as the wayfarer forums, except, that doesn’t seem to happen. Someone from here, sees it and then shares it here. Inefficient communication by Niantic. It was supposed to be a dig at the Ingress team and their inability to communicate effectively.
