Appeals to slightly move portals in order to create pokéstops

When pokestop submissions go live worldwide it’s gonna be a mess. Most Pokémon GO players have no idea that there are so many potential pokéstops that are already portals in Ingress but are invisible to them since they share a S2 L17 cell with another portal. Not to mention that most players don’t know what a S2 cell is and all the rules behind.

The result? There are going to be a ton of requests that will be marked as duplicates and rejected over and over again. Pokémon GO players will keep submitting them and OPR reviewers will keep rejecting them. It will be a waste of time, nominations and the backlog will be worse than ever.

Current situation, portal edit submission: “please move the portal a little so we can have a new pokéstop/gym”. Rejected most of the times.

In my opinion, there should be an appeal section dedicated to these scenarios where, with all the necessary proofs, we could ask Niantic to move a portal (if doing so doesn’t make any difference) with the specific purpose of making it available in Pokémon GO as well.

I’m not talking about statues or plaques where the portal needs to be to the exact precise location of the POI; I’m taking about parks, playgrounds, sport fields, large buildings and so on, where there’s no one correct location, but anywhere around/inside the POI can be a good spot for the portal, as long as it can be safely accessed.

Most common thing in my area are church's moving from one side of the road to the other and 30m away. Some people don't care or give a shot about correct position no Mather the size of the poi. They will continue trying over and over until they success.

We have this fundamental conflict where actions in two separate games influence the other, but I think your suggestion is, at least in theory, sane, I do believe Niantic would want good portals to be visible in all their games.

even if we tried to do get it as accurate as possible to do so while keeping portal accuracy on spot won't happen. Agents are notorious for submitting 50 feet away from where they take the pic from their car across the street etc. I have a bone to pick when I get a valid submission and the submitter can't even realize the portal is supposed to be on the object not across the street at the house. Also within in reason a basketball court or baseball field should be on the edge of the object not in the play area of the sport. I know of some areas where agents were notorious early on for submitting portals in the wrong location instead of the object they placed it where they took the pic. Should I be punished if moving portals onto the object frees up space for more portals in a park. No I should not. If one portal is offset it can create a domino effect ruining entire areas. These edits would not bring online pokestops or gyms but it would open spots for other objects for other niantic games and the POI database. Agents have been successful at moving portals back to proper location to add more portals in an area. I can't tell people how many times dense areas have been offset just to add more portals increase farming for both games.

This is why I think nominations should be removed from Ingress and PoGo entirely and be a separate NRWP nomination app where you can see all existing and pending POIs.

I support this idea, but remember Niantic may be playing the long game, They may just want tons of valid portals, locally vetted - and down the line they may make another game with different rules or sell the whole game engine. As such it may be enough for them to get good nominations now, even if they don't go online right away.

  • Why not just using the same cell rules for portals and Pokestops ?

  • There's 40% less pokestops than portals.

A simple idea to avoid all this chaos would be to abolish this ''one poi for s17 cell''. 😊
