When I decide to participate in events, I mentally do a calculation - will the cost of the event (in money, time, etc.) be worth the reward?
One way to make events more appealing is to group them into one weekend experiences. Not all of the events are meant to be stand-alone events.
For example, the Murrieta NL 1331 visit + Mission Day was awesome because I got to experience an NL visit and complete Missions at the same time.
Another example - Chicago 2019. I went for GoRuck on Friday, the Anomaly on Saturday, and Mission Day on Sunday. This meant that I had lots of opportunities for fun in the same place in the same weekend.
A Hexathlon would be great as a supporting event to an Anomaly. For example, folks can go to the Anomaly on Saturday and the Hexalthlon on Sunday. Many Agents, me included, travel more to support our teammates than to prove that we're "the best, like no one ever was". Just as I wouldn't put a GoRuck Stealth as a standalone event, I would not put a Hexathlon as a standalone event either.
Here's an example of a schedule that would invite me to attend the event:
Friday 6pm-12am GoRuck
Saturday 12pm-4pm Anomaly
Saturday 5pm-7pm Ingress XFac Afterparty / Character Meet-And-Greet
What makes ingress so unique is the team game/planning/strategy part. That sets it apart from any other AR game. And that's why I'm still hooked with it.
So please when Niantic plans to bring back live event, it should go back to that level.
There is also Mission Days / Intel Ops which can be done in each city around the world.
It would be great to have real Mission Days back. Standalone, not only connected to anomalies. Niantic already took a step to make them less dependent on in person registration, so while we hopefully are all vaccinated by now and can have a beer together and pick up MD swag those who prefer to keep distance can do so. Please don't make Second Sunday a permanent regular event and replacement for Mission Day!
+1, Camp Navarro 2018 was the best experience I had with Ingress, period. Flying for the first time ever, doing the big trip from Germany to America and meeting friends that I have only known through messages for the first time is the most treasured memory I have. I'm fully aware that these Camp expensive and not profitable for Niantic at all, as well as a nightmare to set up, but god is it worth it.
Bringing back anomalies would be great, where possible to safely do so. Leading up to an anomaly, however…
Field Test: Hexathlon - but this time with a list of tasks voted on of agents local to the event location (10 tasks, pick 5 you’d want to do in X time limit in this city).
Merge Intel Ops with Tessellation. (For those who never got to participate in a Foxhound, Intel Op event, think scavenger hunt with clues given by characters along the way, to locate a physical puzzle piece. Puzzle had to be assembled to a minimum of X% to solve before the end of the event). If Foxhound is no longer doing this, I am sure it can still be done, whether it’s a whole day of decoding in person in one city, or spreading out each search for a puzzle piece to individual cities and towns across the globe.
Mission Day in person. We had two team leads ready to put in a bid for a fall 2020 MD in CT before things shut down in March 2020.
NL- events in smaller cities, different from the previous locations.
Anomalies! Oops... Sorry. You said "besides anomalies"... Ok, in person events faction vs faction, different scoring periods with different goals, multiple sites over a few cycles!
live events will probably be postponed even longer next year as it seems a new mutation of the new virus called B.1.1.529 that is also resistent to current vaccines is starting to spread in africa and EU already wants block all flights to europe from africa so who knows what happens.....
Hexas didn't even give us additional badges. I have zero incentive to attend any more of them. The Mission Day on the next day is more fun and engaging, but even those fall flat without a centralized check-out location. It becomes incumbent on local leadership to choose and arrange any sort of faction-sanctioned meetup, then drive the publicity and availability, and none of this is any easier with a cross faction meet.
More partnerships with GORUCK would be awesome, but I recognize myself and others to usually be in the minority to push for these events. The solution to that I put to all Ingress ruckers, that your job is to be elite, not elitist. Also, GORUCK participants are just as eager to chase pieces of 2x3inch velcro as they do scanner bling. Ruth has done an amazing job running several Bannerruck events and does the whole shebang with Google forms and an honor code. I.e., if you didn't get there with your feet, don't submit for recognition or a patch and these are EASILY scalable to in person or virtual. Niantic could really learn there. And I miss the h*ll out of Operation Clear Field.
But i doubt we will be able to have real anomaly anytime soon so why not do something like connected cells with hexathlons or something ? could be fun and u can play them local no need travel in corona times.
Please make events where people play locally(20-30 kilometre) and please make events in daytime(9am to 1 pm) . Who is travelling to reach those event area will stuck if you start event at 5 pm and finish at 7 pm. Most player is comfortable if they can return home before evening.

Sunday 9am-5pm Mission Day
Aside from regular events as such, I'd like to see more emphasis on the faction competition elements in game: the regional and global scores.
they talked some time ago about connected-cells.. maybe do something with that would be fun ?

Any events which needs collaboration.

they need events for those that want play at local areas and for those that like and can travel so nobody is left out.

I would love it if there were more events similar to the 13 Archetypes decoding challenge. That was a lot of fun.
Also, any GoRuck events would be great.
Camp Navarro 🥲
AKA Nerding Man

I would like to see the Full Version of Tessellation done in the Next Sequence. Complete Versions of Real Portal Hunts and Real Live Drops.
And I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of PAC as soon as possible.

each hexalton had a unique medal .
it was fun to have something different from anomaly (but should not replace anomaly)
I would really love small event like that, like short local shards event 😍 (but not XF bs shards!)
