No groups visible after tapping invite

Some time in the last half hour or so I got an invite to an event. No idea where it is, of course. Unfamiliar username invited me -- but there are a lot of people who know my name who I don't immediately place.

I tapped on the notification. No events in range. I scrolled out and out and out -- I'm looking at half of California and there are no groups or events. There used to be a fair number. What happened?
