Finally a design I like, but don't really love the idea of buying a medal over earning it. I might grab this one later one, but as of now, going to pass. Very curious about the medal design for the upcoming event, wish they would tease that one...
I agree with many agents wanting medals for special events and not just buying them.
Very good design! I liked
"In Greek mythology, Hyperion was one of the twelve Titan children of Gaia (Earth) and Uranus (Sky). With his sister, the Titaness Theia, Hyperion fathered Helios (Sun), Selene (Moon) and Eos (Dawn).
Hyperion was, along with his son Helios, a personification of the sun, with the two sometimes identified.John Keats's abandoned epic poem Hyperion is among the literary works that feature the figure."
@NianticBrian is profile sorting something on the radar? Because I regretted buying the previous seasonal medals and feel like I'd regret buying this one too if profiles stay as they are, yet I feel like I might also regret not buying this if you might someday give us the ability to sort badges. Any insight to help me make an informed decision would be appreciated.
So far, Niantic doesn't have any incentive to offer earned event badges over paid badges since they have to code an event and get no revenue for it directly. The upcoming AP challenge badge seems to be a middle ground for this since the badge can't be bought directly but can be pay-to-win via APEX and Battle Beacons. The Optima Kinetic Challenge Pt.2 can be the same if they offer paid, limited use k-caps during the event.
At first pass, I'm okay with this compromise of pay-to-win challenge badges since you can work your **** off to max it out for free or throw Niantic some money to make it easier. I would NOT be okay with challenge badges that require "participation in n=X Battle Beacons" or something that requires agents (yourself or others) to spend money.
I'd personally find it quite weird buying winter-themed badges in the middle of summer and summer-themed badges in the middle of winter, so I don't.
Don't suppose we could also offer the reverse badges based on location? Perfectly happy for Southern Hemisphere to lag 6 months behind rather than expecting brand-new designs (though hemisphere-specific seasonal badges would be kinda cool, and make for unique profiles which allow you to reflect travels across hemispheres etc. as the world opens back up).
Automatically interested with this medal since the first look. Talk about in store medal, how about to bring up the tiers on the purchased medal? Maybe it would be more interesting to get.
- Purchased medal have its own tiers, starting with Bronze tier.
- With that starting tier, Agents that bought the medal can upgrade that medal by playing (maybe with some number of fielding, or deploying, or destroying or other actions).
Benefits: buying medal can be more interesting! agents can still have more reasons to play, not just buy and "nothing" to do.
Anyway, love the medal design, vibrant color! Thank you designer team! Keep up!
#IMO that medal will made alive by doing something to upgrade purchased medal. Just like we earn most medal: by doing actions.
I like the idea of having a medal that you can purchase that can be upgraded as long as it doesn't count towards leveling... At each tier you could get a loadout if you work towards it.
I think that can really add something to it... I'd be more likely to buy a metal and I'd be more likely to get out and play.
Here's a question for you, should there be a time limit on being able to upgrade it? I think there should be otherwise eventually everyone's always gets to the highest level on a long enough timeline.
Gold - 10 fields - loadout 20 bursters/resos, 1 Jarvis and one ADA, Hyperion beacon (which folks could place when they get gold to immediately mark the achievement which breeds a little bit more life into the observable gamescape)
Yes. Agreed. Time limit & not count towards leveling should be more interesting & fair.
About time limit, maybe during the events. So there's more reason to get out & play to earn higher (purchased) medal.
About actions shouldn't count as leveling is great, so purchase a medal didn't seems like a pay to win actions. But the mechanism, i didn't get how it should be? (Maybe) A dropped mission/task without AP but counted in purchased medal stats that should be done in certain time.
*Let's explore this #TierUpgradeOnPurchasedMedal idea. Maybe there's another agent & NIA have same opinion.
Brilliant! I could see an issue with people complaining that they had to initially "buy in" to the challenge. Perhaps the base (free) challenge could earn up to gold tier and if you bought the paid badge you could earn up to onyx and/or get a loadout with each medal tier. I would love for the highest loadout tier to have some good VR gear (Aegis or ADA/Jarvis) since it would require a LOT of gameplay and could only be earned once per account.
Honestly, people sneer at the idea of research tasks like in PGO, but this would be a perfect fit. Buy the medal "research", go through a set list of tasks and get the medal at the end. The research doesn't have to expire, just do it whenever you want. Prize it like the medals are now (2500 CMU) and you'd have already improved those medals by a mile.
I’ve proposed this exact scenario each time these medals come up. For anyone too afraid to go outside, the tasks will be there waiting for them when the life vest can be removed or the police don’t ticket you, lol. I play PoGo maybe once a month, but I’ve got like 8 of those quest things lined up if I get bored enough.
I think there are reasons to have medals like the optima ones where we all do them at the same time, but these clipart medals should still have some sort of effort put into them or, as suggested, a tiered option. You wanna buy clipart medal, you get this one, wanna complete the tasks associated with them, you get the slightly different clipart medal. The Knight of Tesselation medals come to mind.

I would buy it if we were able to sort earned medals from bought medals on our profiles.
nice badge :D

Medal acquired ! But I'm still waiting for that NL1331X 2020 medal that was promised to be in the in app store 😒
Ingress artists look like to be into Retrowave. And I love it!
Gostei, quanto mais medalhas melhor.
I can't deny outrun design and vaporwave aesthetics... I'm in

Remember when medals were earned by hard work instead of this pay to win rubbish Niantic are spoon feeding us nowadays?
Come on get it together Niantic!
Remember when these cosmetic badges weren't used for leveling and you don't "win" anything with them?
Come on, stop whining.
I like the design but I prefer to earn medals not buy “shinies”.
I like to think that Niantic is keeping some graphic designers employed by having these badges made, and I'll always support that.
What utter nonsense is this?
No, because I started playing in 2015 and they were already selling medals in anomaly kits by then.
You old farts really need to accept you've lost this argument and let it go. You're never getting back your Google-subsidized game, you freeloader.

I like the design, even if it is an overused and probably plagiarized motif.
Bought the badge as I haven't bought one in a while, mostly because all the others being offered are hideous or incredibly plain.
I'd personally find it quite weird buying winter-themed badges in the middle of summer and summer-themed badges in the middle of winter, so I don't.

Nah i'm waiting too 😤
Rough example...
Hyperion purchase for bronze
Silver - 10 portals captured - loadout 10 bursters 10 resos
Gold - 10 fields - loadout 20 bursters/resos, 1 Jarvis and one ADA, Hyperion beacon (which folks could place when they get gold to immediately mark the achievement which breeds a little bit more life into the observable gamescape)
It’s winter in southern hemisphere. Why don’t you provide Wintergreen/ Winterblue Medals again?
Stop northern-centered thinking.

Yes. But need to keep the loadout gained shouldn't be a "pay to win".
i like the idea of having different versions of the same badge depending of:
- your level
- progress of other badge.
- progress in an event.
so lot of agents can have Hyperion if they buy it but with different apearance (colors, borders, etc..)
