problem is niantic has yet presented how portal scans will benefit anything to ingress, will it ever ? as it is now its just boring chores waving your phone in public and getting weird looks from strangers not understanding what u are doing exactly...
most ppl turns off ar since its just drains battery more and isnt really fun, how would ar help in ingress ? u want a fast paced game without any AR that doesnt bring any fun to it.. I did some scanning for the fingerprint badge but wow it was so boring cant believe those that scan fulltime how they find this fun is beyond me..
Exploration has always been forefront for me. It's really odd to be surprised that people play the game different - something that has been encouraged from the start. I wouldn't have known of the area around me without exploring.
Niantic DOES hire "surveyors" to scan portals in select cities. The "six key launch cities" with surveyors are: San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York City, London, and Tokyo. That list is being expanded with: Anaheim, Santa Ana, Chicago, DC, Seattle, Nagoya, Kyoto, Singapore, Paris. Developers from Atlanta and Copenhagen asked if they could be included - Niantic said they, and others, are in the works for their next wave.
They don't "contract out future projects to a third party." They sell access to Lightship.
Until Niantic implemented the manpower reduction by 8%. I could have sworn I also saw an ad that Niantic was hiring a contractor for their future games in Zip recruiter a few months ago (must be for the Transformers game). I guess that job has been taken off...
@KarM3L Certainly chicken and the egg for portal scanning but if Niantic wants me to do a lot of wholly uninteresting labor then they're going to have to show me the benefit. If they are planning to use scans in Ingress then they can send the employees out to scan everything within a quarter mile of their HQ a hundred times and use that to demonstrate the benefits of AR in Ingress. The Vaillancourt Fountain is just across the street from their Ferry Building office and it would be an awesome demo vehicle for immersive AR-- you can actually walk all around it including catwalks over the water between the pipes and a walkway that goes underneath the flowing water.

EDIT: I copied the below to its own post. Buried too deep here for most to see.
They DID send people out to scan around their building - all around San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, New York City, London, and Tokyo, with more in the works.
Are other companies paying Niantic for the data gathered from the portal scans? I think so because there is no such thing as "free lunch." Niantic needs to FAIRLY COMPENSATE its players who want to do those portal scans. FAIR COMPENSATION does not mean a measly battle beacon after numerous scans.
I think my biggest issue with the free labor thing is the fact that they want it, yet can't meet us halfway with some communication. So many things they're falling short on, yet, please keep scanning and adding to the wayspot database. Please build us this thing that we can make oodles of money off of, but damned if we're gonna fix the lag issue or get on the forums or have AMAs.
I've recently got hooked on that State of Survival game, basically, farmville meets the walking dead. But it's easy entertainment I can tap around when I'm at my desk since Ingress offers mostly nothing in regards to gameplay while sitting at my desk (and that's fine, I'm supposed to get moving or something). Anyways, those devs post nearly almost every day. When they goof up, they drop gifts. When there is downtime, some more gifts. I know it's different in some ways, but in another ways, it's not. Spending 15 minutes a day to create a relationship with the community only benefits them. And in so many ways. But, silence. They know what's best for us. Please rate us 5 stars, surely that will fix the popularity of this game....

I wrote this a year ago now, glad we are back to 3 agents for p7.
Chicken or egg what came first???
Scanning is a totally OPTIONAL part of the game. So don't do it if you don't want to!

I understand the rest of your sentiments.
He's made the argument before with unrealistic expectations:

You can download Niantic's app ARVoyage.

@MargariteDVille Thanks!
However, my point stands. If they want me to do things in Ingress they can show me in Ingress what the benefits will be.
And that's probably what will be seen with VPS

They built up the portal network with free labour
Just don't complain about your areas with no scan data when the new features roll out in q4.
Without us in the beta program, we just don't know what the new gameplay mechanics will be.
At the moment, I can do it, so I will.
Sometimes, if I am not where I am normally, I'll scan wayspots as a 2FLA mechanism
