QOL bugfixes for OPR

There are several OPR issues that annoy me every time I review portals.

  1. OPR uses a wrong algorithm for downsampling the portal image, resulting in a blurry preview. The thumbnail picture is crisp, but when I click on it I get a blurry enlarged image. "Full size" image is displayed by Google and is fine.
  2. Map in Location Edit submissions does not have a "full screen" button.
  3. Portal images on the "Check for Duplicates" map often require scrolling to get to the "Mark as Duplicate" button.
  4. Inability to temporarily hide the location marker on the "Check Location" map. The marker often obstructs the PoI on the aerial image.
  5. Occasional error 403 when trying to open full size image from Prime nominations (apparently this happens only to the first few days of Prime nominations, but I still see quite a few of them, maybe about 10% of my reviews have this issue).

All 5 are minor and have workarounds, but I think it's time Niantic showed some love for the reviewers and improved our QOL by fixing these issues.

Just in case you don't know what the workarounds are:

  1. Go to the Full Size image.
  2. Zoom out until you can drag the yellow Street View guy onto the map. Street View has the full screen button.
  3. Well, scroll.
  4. Click on "suggest a new location" link, drag the marker away from the PoI. When done click "Reset" and select location star rating.
  5. Replace "s=0" at the end of the URL by "s=1600".

I've dealt with nearly all of these too, unfortunately they fall in the QoL updates for OPR. Meanwhile I think they have bigger issues to tackle at the current moment. You might want to mention it on the next AMA though or in the other thread of what feature should Niantic focus on when they asked about it a couple days ago. I personally think they need to rework the edit feature and the way we view edits in OPR more than the QoL features.

Also theres another small bug you missed since it showed 3 to 4 weeks back where the category feature doesn't lead to it and just turns into an arrow. I review the whole candidate and then this bug occurs and I have to refresh the whole page to resolve the issue. This only affects those who do categories for every candidates like me and I have seen it replicated on PC/Laptop/Phone for me. I can't recreate the bug either besides it happening at random moments.

Thanks msz21, good point. I don't do categories, so I've never seen that bug.

Unfortunately I don't have a Telegram account as my phone has too many messaging apps already, so no AMA for me. And I cannot find the thread where Niantic asked for priorities 🙁.

Major enhancements like the rework of the Edit feature require a lot more effort than a minor QoL improvement, and often can be done by different people. Edit feature redesign would need to be done by a senior engineer, then reviewed, scheduled and implemented. A minor QoL fix can often be done by somebody with little experience.

The AMA is actually on this forum - here's the link to the June/July one (apparently I can't post links, so it's /en/discussion/1308, add that : https://community.ingress.com/en/discussion/1308/june-july-ingress-ask-me-anything-ama

Otherwise, I completely agree with your points, especially with the smaller points (such as an ability to hide the PoI pin on the map so you can better look at the satellite imagery)
