What are anomalies?

I have been playing for more than a year and I still have many doubts regarding the game. One of these doubts is ANOMALIES. I regularly see a lot of players who have anomaly medals and I wish I could get some.

What are anomalies?

How can I participate?

Thank for the info.

Anomalies are faction vs. faction events put on by Niantic on specific dates in specific cities. The most recent ones were held in autumn of 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic put a damper on in-person events. Only Niantic can say when and where the next ones will be held.

In the meantime, the following links might give you a sense of what the mechanics of anomalies are like:

There's also a huge social component. If you know anyone who's participated in anomalies, ask them for their stories. 😃

Thanks! I'm going to read all this information to understand it well.

  • Anomalies are like a cross between a conference, and reunion, a battle, and a tournament. Old friends and foes meet and greet, the factions battle it out on the field, and there's an afterparty. Epic deeds are done on the playing field, which become the stuff of legend. And hordes of blue and green players roam the streets in outlandish garb, freaking the mundanes.

It's a truly unique gaming experience - one of those "deep Ingress" things that really makes you appreciate the game, and its potential. It also is one of the things that builds and maintains community networks; only a fraction of agents go to Anomalies, but many of those who do are leaders in their local communities, and having these events keeps those folks engaged and helps tie the different communities together. Without them, my sense is that Ingress tends to wither.

Anyway, I doubt there will be any soon, due to the pandemic. But when they are restarted, an announcement will be made with dates and locations. (There used to be multiple dates per quarter, and many locations worldwide. They started cutting back on that, which was a IMHO not a good thing. So it's hard to know how many events there will be on a restart.) Usually, you then register with NIA, and also with your faction (they will have a system - ask the vets). There may be some prep work to do to be ready, but you'll be told about that - there are always lots of new players, and folks from your faction will be available to guide you through the process.

Hope to see you at a future event (that hopefully will be held)!

Hopefully an event can be held soon. I really want to start playing in community.
