Agent is "pinging" home portal 20 times a day.
Okay hello, welcome to the ugly side of ingress. So it appears some agents, and I won't give them the fame they want, havent got much of a life and find it amusing to fire one bursters at a collection of portals which have my resonator on upto 20 times a day, they're also using a blue account to keep it charged, why should I have to turn my push notifications off, or waste jarvis because someone doesn't want to play properly. It has become apparent that you can't actually report for this specific harassment, what options do I have? If you need the name to ban this player then I will post it. Thanks

You could drop your views of what "proper play" is and move on.
That's the least helpful thing possible. My game is being ruined as Im getting spam attack notifications and missing the important ones?
The agent doing that obviously knows that you're annoyed by it and keeps going because of that. The best strategy is to ignore it, because as I see it, you're pretty much out of other options. If the agent in question notices that you're not giving a damn, he/she might just stop.
Yeah I get that, I haven't actually done anything to make them know I'm getting frustrated with it, there is multiple agents on the portal not just me and I think he's trying to annoy us all.. Just a shame that this kind of thing happens. The agent in question hardly plays other than to do this. Thanks for the input BTW.
Then I would try finding that agent and talk to him/her in person. There's a possibility that he/she doesnt actually know that others are annoyed - and you should encourage him/her to either do nothing or flatten the entire compound ^^
I do that often myself. I fire single bursters even if I know I won't actually attack portals, to distract agents from portals they truly need to defend and force them to disable attack push notifications. Obviosly it's working :) It's just another tactic to use against players of another faction, I see nothing that can be called "harrassment" or can be reported.
Either way, finding out about other peoples motives and movements by just befriending them has always worked for me. We're all playing the same game after all.
That does sound like harassment.
I will occasionally fire a burster or two at a portal that I know someone cares about just as a way of saying hello, but typically I would only do this with someone I was on good terms with and not more than once a week. Doing it many times per day if it's really just to annoy you would surely count as harassment.
Yeah quite possible in most circumastances, however this particular agent has previously shouted abuse at children who defeat the pokemon gym at this portal, other Res agent has also claimed he shouted abuse at him and his daughter from the window. So not a friendly person. And also how you say about pinging to gain an advantage, he's just doing it to be annoying, doesn't play beyond his street.
Oh, my sweet summer child, this is not the ugly side of Ingress, is normal gameplay. You should just take it easy.
Disagree.
When riding a public transport, it's my routine to fire on everything I pass by. Obviously most of things won't get neutralized or even damaged, but still gotta try to pop those shields and whatnot.
I will do that even more often if I know it's a couch portal of some agent of an opposite faction. Nothing personal, simply distracting and keeping busy until they get tired and won't be able to defend a portal when someone actually comes to attack it.
Unfortunately, "those" people are also part of Ingress and I can only recommend to ignore it in-game. If he does something illegal in real life, well you know what to do.
Difference is there, you are actually playing the game, where this agent isn't.
What is "playing a game"? If I encounter an agent who furiously recharges their portals as soon as I try to neutralize them, I will employ the same tactic each time I'm around the area or see portals of the said agent - including if I won't actually go for those portals. Like, each time I just meet friends in the area, simply pass by it, or whatever. I presume that eventually the agent is going to get tired of false attacks and will disable notifications, which would let me neutralize portals with ease. I don't think I do something illegal, I only use current system to my advantage as much as I'm able to.
As I've tried to say before, how to play Ingress "correctly" is not set in stone. It is your own view. For example, there are people out there that just pull out the scanner to do missions and nothing else.
Can you report them for multi-accounting first of all?
if u suspect someone isnt playing legit just report the names u feel dont play by TOS.
In game harassment is very real, plus it can even occur by those supposedly on the same side as you.
If there are multiple blue resos in the portal - how do you know that the attacker is the one recharging with a fake blue account?
Secondly, I see nothing wrong with randomly pinging portals. The whole idea of doing it is to get defenders to ignore attack notifications so that when you do attack your opponents are more likely to be caught off guard.
Unfortunately that is a tactic to drain cubes, keys etc. off players that are known rechargers, and if it done enough at all hours day and night they will lash at whoever is doing it.
I think you need to separate the issues here:
Lots of Alerting: normal game play, and I don’t understand how anyone thinks otherwise. Yes it can annoy you, and you can either turn alerts off or be ready to recharge all the time.
Yelling abuse: Against TOS, but it’s going to be hard to get proof to satisfy Niantic and no they shouldn’t just take your word for it. If it breaches local laws, engaging law enforcement is a better idea.
Multi-accounting: Against TOS, but do you even know that they are doing that? It doesn’t seem as likely as other explanations. If you know of someone’s multi... report it.
To add to this distinct and high-level analysis:
Reporting of multi-accounting usually does not work as expected.
Thus practically speaking it's indeed a wise choice to just ignore those attack alerts. It's not fair but just wise. The better reason for this choice IMO is not "by doing so the people that want to annoy you might just stop", it's because...even if your assumption that some players against you are not playing properly or violating the rules or they are indeed using RES sub-accounts to annoy you, it's still difficult for you to get those sub-accounts banned so no practical solutions other than ignoring.
I'm on your side regarding filing reports by you of inappropriate behaviors and violations of rules of those players, but just practically speaking I doubt whether those reports would result in any change. If those players against you are actually not violating the rules ( or they did but wouldn't be confirmed by Niantic but you are not sure ) then it's merely part of the game to make you as the opponent faction players annoyed .
Since when would this be harresment or not allowed gameplay? that would mean that not taking down a portal would be a violation of the TOS. In that case recharging portals who are under attack would also be faul play.
And you're sure the agent doesn't live/work nearby? It'd be kinda hard to spend enough time to hit a portal 20 times a day if they have to travel to it each time.
Which means, I wouldn't get too possessive about "your home portal".
Dropping a fake hit (to try to get people defending something you aren't seriously attacking) is a perfectly valid strategy - decoy hits are used in battles, both of the game and real variety quite often.
Spamming it 20 times/day, however, is something else. That's not a decoy op, that's just spam... IF it's intentional.
Also, however, consider that L8 XMPs go quite far on their 5th range increment. If you're anywhere near a main road, you may just be getting the residual damage on drive-by attacks that aren't even aimed at the portal in question. Or you may have something like 2 agents that live across the street from each other, in range of each others' couch portals, and if they take turns blasting each other 4 times/day, 20 XMPs clipping your portal down the road is expected at that point.
Even assuming that the other side even knows its your couch portal, if they wanted to interfere, it's highly unlikely they'd use a spam and harassment campaign, as opposed to just bricking the portal.
That is an actual legitimate strategy.
Agree. One I've used myself and have been on the receiving end of too.
I have all notification and sounds turned off on my phone because of Ingress, band honestly it is blessed.
They're playing the game, but a different meta than you are.
Can you flip the portal and then have a teammate flip it back? Now you're not in the portal, no more notifications...
