Adding more challenges to glyphing

I was thinking earlier today that it would be interesting to add more challenges or twists, optionally, to glyphing. It has not changed in a while and to me it's a little stale. Here are a few thoughts.

Option 1: Using a different input on the command channel, you can speed up the glyph sequence beyond the current complex sequence time. When Prime first came out, Complex mode was substantially faster than it is now, and was later slowed down. Some agents really enjoyed that faster mode and would like to see it come back. No change in bonus or AP, just a faster sequence time.

Option 2: A new command channel sequence causes the glyph screen to only show you the translation of the glyph sequence you need to input, as a single sentence, but does not show you the glyphs themselves. It's up to the agent to remember the phrase and translate it back into the appropriate glyphs. Getting this sequence correct could come with an additional bonus of either AP or gear.

Option 3: On a P8 built by all-recursed agents, a 6-glyph sequence is unlocked. This could be optional at command time or unlocked on a portal by a boost, etc. This would give out a higher bonus as well as a higher point value on Translator.

Thoughts?

Remember that promised L17 that was only available by a crazy glyph hack sequence? Niantic is a bit late with the followup on that but maybe it's time for that sequence. Instead of L17 it comes with a permanent 20% boost on glyph hacks. I would also like to see an extra 20% boost for completing a sequence in less than half (or maybe lower) the allotted time?

I like your #1 and #2. I get bored waiting for glyph sequences. I would suggest a shorter cooldown time would be a nice bonus, since there's no real value in plowing through a sequence at lightning speed and then having to wait around longer before you can hack again.

And for the love of all that is holy can we make complex/simple/regular and more/less/normal into settings? I'm quite certain I've glyhed COMPLEX-LESS at least 25,000 times by now and I'm a bit bored with it.

I really like Option 1 as a flat multiplier. Every time you enter the "more" command, the sequence is spread up by X%, up to a certain absurdly fast cap. Option 2 is also an interesting twist, and probably wouldn't be too hard to add.

My only concern is Option 3, given that you can't remove a level 8 resonator so it could be too easy for a non-recursed lvl 8 player to add a resonator and mess up the entire sequence. What if, instead, recursed players who hacked a level 8 Portal had the option to add more glyphs to a 5-glyph sequence, dependant on the number of times they've recursed? So a twice-recursed player hacking a level 8 Portal could have the option of adding up to two glyphs to the end of the sequence.

In addition to just adding more glyphs in general, I'd also love to see a new mini-game altogether. We have an entire alphabet of Undine Runes that could be turned into a new matching game. It wouldn't be easy to justify in-lore given the events of the Tessellation, but there are ways it could be explained.

  • I like both 1 and 2.

About 3, I'm not so sure

However, I would love a glyph command to increase the sequence length.

So on a P5 portal, you can increase the glyphs from 3 to 5 and yield more output.

Or challenge yourself to a complex 7-sequence glyph on a P8

    love those ideas.

Glyphs are really easy even on complex when used to.

You could pick #2 for a reverse glyph sequence, even longer than a normal one, and use it for a new mini-game?

For option 3, I was thinking more along the lines of farms in the future, where you're purpose-building P8s. In that case it would require coordination to ensure only recursed agents are building the portals in question. It also adds a real benefit to recursion and promotes a new form of gameplay.

But that being said, I do really like your idea of being able to add more levels, but up to a point. There are people with 20+ recursions, that would be a nonsensical amount to add to the glyph sequence. I would say a maximum of 7 or 8, which would work for the existing screen visually. Beyond that, it would be a visual mess.

I would also like another mini-game, but I thought this would be an easy first step. 😊

I also wanted to add that I intended for the portal to be made by recursed agents only to unlock it, so that it's more a team dynamic and less of an individual reward. Otherwise recursed agents can just start getting that benefit on any random P8 they find, and I think that's potentially unbalanced.

How about instead of settings, a command you input to give you settings for 10/20/30 minutes at a time or something similar? I don't always want more keys on a portal and don't want to have to go into settings to turn it off. So if you're microfielding, input a sequence and you'll get more keys activated for 30 minutes until it wears off. Same with Complex, input it at a farm and you don't need to do it for every single portal.

For example: Input "MORE ALL, COMPLEX ALL" at command channel, and for 30 minutes you'll the equivalent of complex & more on every glyph. Want it to end early? enter "END" at command channel time and things revert to normal/stateless.

@thesolo I never want anything but complex. I can see an argument for key/no-key being temporary but complex seems like a set-it-once thing that can be overridden on an occasional basis.

That's fair, I'm in the exact same boat. I would want complex all the time, but keys are variable.
