why max. 8 outgoing links, and not 9?
in General
Is there any particular reasons why 8 was chosen as the maximum number of outgoing links?
9 would make it easier to build HCF4 (HCF5) without having to throw the 9th (17th) link in advance, or wasting a SBUL.

Probably has something to do with it being a multiple of 2, regarding the general pattern of things in computer technology following the 2-4-8-16-32-64-128-256-512-1024-etc pattern based on binary/bits/bytes.
8 is the key value in Ingress.
IMO, (maybe) that's because there are also 8 resonators, each out link uses the energy from each resonator, I saw it in the Redacted animation, where the link energy flow comes from the resonator
As with many of the "Why does it work this way, it'd be so much easier if..." questions, it's because Ingress is a game, and games require challenges or they become boring.
What would be the skill or challenge in a HCF if you didn't have to make sure you did all the links in the right order? If you could just build a HCF7 from random links you found?
Just as a point of note, I know Prime has 'broken' a lot of the lore logic, but keys draw power from other portals. You can attach as many links to a given energy source (portal) as you want, and draw it's power, but the power direction is from the portal you had a key for, back to the portal you linked out from.
Keys are like lightning tendrils. They reach out, find the earth, then the light arcs back up as it ignites.
Thanks for note
So… You are limited in the amount of energy you can draw into a portal (outgoing links), but you can draw out an unlimited amount of energy from a portal (incoming links)? This seems backwards to me, but then I didn't start paying attention to the "lore" until The Tessellation. 🤨🤔
I think the animation works backwards now on the link but yeah, that's the original lore.
