IMO, to protect completely from the opponent's attack it is better to use 4 Aegis (if we are with a partner), it will give us more time to continue to recharge. Turret / Force Amp counterattack will have little effect on high level agents using hypercube.
Shield/shield/FA/T can be a good combination for portals adjacent to ones that you want to protect. It also works pretty well in a super dense area if you make everything hard shield/hard shield/FA/T, though hypercubes take some of the edge off of that.
Generally the strategy I've seen is 4 Aegis on the target Portal, 2 shield, force amp, turret on surrounding Portals. Surrounding Portals will receive splash damage from bursters and will sap XM from the player, while 4 Aegis will ensure maximum protection.
It won't ensure protection from a well-equipped Agent, but it is probably the best you can expect.
Force Amps and Turrets are highly effective at draining someone's XM, so they work best where people are in cars driving past. When they drain the XM, people have to recharge before they can fire again, and may have already passed by the portal.
People who stop and attack the portal intentionally are going to burn more cubes, but they're less likely to not destroy the portal, so having 4 shields is better because it gives you more recharging time and makes them burn more bursters before they destroy the portal.
However, all of this is irrelevant if the portal has no or minimal links, because Ultrastrikes can destroy the mods quickly.
Turrets its a very handy modd, when you have a permafarm that the other faction farms. The modd will make the portal strike the enemy more often when he is hacking the portal.
The enemy will get gears, but will not gain as much xm left to use the gear.

This is the best combination and pretty annoying.
If it's a isolated portal with full access to its centre, it doesn't matter what you put on it, it will go down easily.

As said above, depending on the density and level of portals.
IMO Dense lvl8 portals don't need FAs.
It depends what you're defending against.
