Request Feature - Upgrade Mind Units (MU) East Indonesia
Dear Niantic . I hope you can see and give a response to my post. Here I want to request or perhaps give an advice about Mind Units (MU) in East Indonesia such as Maluku and Papua. I recently play Ingress in Papua. But the Mind Units here are very less. I just want to request to Niantic, could you upgrade Mind Units (MU) in East Indonesia especially in Papua and/or Maluku. I hope you read this. I will wait.
Thanks

MU is automatically calculated based on population density for the area you fielded over. This data is periodically updated (I believe) using publicly available resources for population in different areas, and then the MU value is updated. If you need more MU for Mind Controller or just for your profile, make larger fields, travel to more people-dense places (when it is safe to do so!!) and create large fields. Network with your fellow agents, see if you can plan out a mega field, or even an inter-island field.
Yes that is what I have knew. I thought they never updated. I thought Niantic could increase the MU even though the density of population of an area is less without automatically updated. But thanks anyway.
Considering your most recent Census was done in 2020, an automatic MU update would have been applied. The population spread isn't proper though since the entire population is distributed across the whole district. If the district has one medium sized town and a very large forest, you'll see a comparatively small MU per cell.
Point taken. Thanks lot for the explanation ☺️
@aaronvianno :
Yeah we have new townships, MU never changed.
I always assumed there was an API pulling that. Guess not then 🙃
The vague explanation I heard, was that in 2012 they manually pulled as much data as they possibly could get, and made some up based on googling city total populations, and the CIA factbook, and then applied a smoothing algorithm to the data to generate MU values.
So where they had more detailed and location specific data, it's more varied, where as some places, its "Most in the center of the city and less at the edges".
It also explains why fish provide MU.
Guess this thread should really be a "do whatever was done in 2012 again and update the MUs". Not like it'll make much of a difference with the fish and forests.
Yeah, I don't know how much effort that is, compared to the value for money of doing it. If there was a way to use it in other Niantic games, it'd get automated by some cashed up experimental team.
MU has never been updated as far as I can tell. That's been the issue on a lot of previous topics about MU and how it's even calculated. I think it's been determined that MU is based more on where the three portals are located when the field is made for MU calculation. The area covered is just one part of the value.
I would think it was based on census data (usually through TIGER) but that makes me wonder what is used for calculating population density outside of the US?
We call them moose units in northern Ontario, because that is all we are covering when we field. 😂
Wonder when MUs gets updated ? 🤔🤔🤔
