Links Crossing on scanner

in Report a Bug
Using iOS 14.4.1
Prior to taking down a portal I noticed a link going NE crossed path on the scanner with multiple links from the portal. After taking down the portal and having it taken back by a Res agent a link from south was made again and the scanner shows the NE bound link crossing the S link to the portal. Intel map shows the correct location for the NE bound link but the scanner has been incorrect for a couple days.

As I understand it, the Intel Map is aware that the world is sphere-like, but the scanner believes that the world is flat. For "short" links, this isn't a problem, but for "long" links, the scanner can end up drawing their middle portions quite a ways from where they actually go. It's been an issue since well before Prime was a glimmer in Niantic's eye.
I think this is related to the Mercator projection, like what @Toxoplasmolly described. Just confirming that this isn't actually a crossing Link, but also this isn't something that we'll tackle addressing on the Ingress app right now.
Thanks for your answer, I appreciate it. That does make sense if the scanner and intel see the world differently. I’ve never seen that happen before and I guess I wasn’t using the right keywords when searching for other instances of this occurring.
Thanks for the response and the confirmation.
