I live in a rural area and it is nearly impossible to get mind units when I make fields. The other day I made a field that was almost 200km long and only got 700 mind units. Will niantic please make a badge that reflects area covered for created fields? I have been playing for 3 years and barely have 100k MU.

I have a google sheet with the area and MU of my big fields. Onyx illuminator was easy, playing in areas that give between 1500 and 10000 MU per square kilometer.
MUs are harder to get but fields are easier to build too.
There's also a question of whether the 2010 data that used to generate MU cells needs updating 10 years on.
I remember when I lived in Vegas, a field covering 30,000 houses generated about 500MU because in 2010 it was open desert.
The tradeoff is that it's much harder to make large fields in urban ares, so often it's actually easier to get more MU by driving across rural areas to set up relatively huge fields. I actually enjoy the challenge of the reverse... finding remote portals where I can set up big fields for as few MU as possible.
It Really should get updated pretty much every country in the world will have several new housing estates or even villages by now
Well 1 sq km here gets about 20 - 40 MU. I only have 100k my so far and I have been playing for 3 years.
It is going to take me forever to get 2 more gold badges to level up to 12. There aren't many portals to hack within a 20 mile radius so I am barely on my bronze hacker badge. I don't have the funds to just take off and drive 2 hrs to civilization so I can get more portals. I seriously thought that the huge field I did would have gotten more than 700mu. 4hrs of driving to only get that was a big disappointment.
Yes indeed it is much easier to level up in the big cities and much harder in the countryside. But there are a number of badges that don't need a big portal network:
First Saturday (12 for gold): you can participate in virtual First Saturdays without travel
scout (1000): scan the same portal(s) all over again
sojourner (60): one daily hack (also with drone)
trecker (300 km)
translator (6000 points): glyph hacks, also with drone. use very rare multi hack and vr heat sink.
recharger (3 million XM)
recon (2500 wayfarer agreements)
In theory, you can reach level 16 without ever deploying or destroying a resonator (although it will take a lot of glyphing and recharging to reach 40 million AP).
