In a city with hundreds of portals, why are you obsessed with just one. And there are plenty of ways to get around a building, or use the GPS signal reflections of the skyscraper glass to drift your phone slightly. There's a trick called 'wall running' where you run directly at a solid wall and stop as you reach it, and your position will float slightly further than you.
Also, one on one, you still can, because lag allows you to do more damage than the resonator's health, before it registers on the recharger's screen.
Yeah I know all of the tricks, but usually it doesn't work. You need to make 50%+ damage to make it. Above 34% may work with a little luck. But usually its lower due to links or too far away R. Without cheating like burster stacking (mods or switch to slower mobile connection or 2nd phone with Hotspot ) its literally impossible to secretly get in 4+ x8. Maybe rechargers skill was low your example, not knowing how to force refresh.
In your example, other points: Go after the other linked portals first, reduce the mass, target multiple portals at once with spreads to disorient them etc etc.
I am not asking for advice. But just to close the subtopic: same scenario next portal, impossible to rid of any link (well, yeah, at some portals you can reach all R) . And FYI: valid strategies are attack in groups, solo in the middle of the night, multiple attacks per day over weeks to get rid of their cubes, multiple test attacks if rechargers take care of other business and so on.
And I've seen players deliberately put portals in spots where Ultrastrikes cannot be used effectively, and in places deliberately off where they should be. They're on my naughty list.
It could be they have a lack of resonators, to many level 8 resonators, trying to get there next badge, just trying to make AP the easy way or they don't know how to play Ingress.
The only way to not destroy a portal is if there someone there deploying resos and shields while others are recharging.
Otherwise, once the shields are gone, you will destroy it, unless you're not using any strategy and just smashing the busters.
There was one time that me and my team destroyed one portal out of range, level 8 with 2 aegis. We were in 7 persons, all spread around the block and coordinated the attack. When they noticed and start recharging, we stoped and pretended to leave, concentrated everyone one the point closer to the remaining resonators and destroyed it.
Other occasions we synchronized the attack with random one around the city, so the owner didn't noticed the real target and wasn't able to recharge it (it was a portal at 160m, easy chargeable if he noticed).
And in many occasions I alone just pretended to leave the place, wait while farming more xmp and came back to the target. My usual strategy is start with 7 or 8 until the owner notice, then I change to whatever low xmp I have until break all shields. Without shields, the portal is already dead, unless you run out of xmp.
The point is: 3 alive resonators = field/active = link mitigation = damage per x8 around 20%, more or less, depending on amount of links and range to resonators. So you need to get in 5+ x8 without any recharge in between. If we are not talking about a standalone signpost, the defenders alsready know where you are since were at a nearby portal before. In this case you not gonna make it, they refresh every second, it doesn't even matter if it was 1 or more recharger.
So back to topic: we see a full deployed portal, maybe with links. However, there are just 2 high level resonators. See above: if you want to recharge it against attacks you need links and 3 (!) survivable resonators. Just 2 lead to same outcome as a single R8 + 7xR1: 3 L8 burster = all R1 destroyed = links down = portal down (assuming a normal portal where you can stand on directly)
I wrote down what I think happened. The guy with portal preparation is right as well: since you don't see R upgrades on intel/iitc, it makes sense that one guy prepares the set and the rest finish it, maybe even to L8. Or cheaters favorite, preparation, backbacks deploy R8 and flip right after, so you literally never see backpacks activity, but the cheater is able to flip it up to L8.
... Not sure if Berlin is the only city on earth where agents of both factions heavily recharge or if you are playing a different game. In fact, Prime's recharge-all button is overpowered. Even 3 R8 will be full recharged with a single click and its faster to force refresh+click than get out 4 bursters. So again, if you cant get closer to the resonators to make 34% or more damage you cannot destroy recharged resonators.

Onsite defense beats onside attacks beats rechargers.
I frequently upgrade BGAN/ZC portals fully to combat this practice.

La acción crea muchas oportunidades.
But the field would die if only 1 reso was alive

And it's going to die whether you have 1 or 3 high level resonators destroyed? What's your point?
"...you run directly at a solid wall and stop as you reach it..."
add this to the list of Things Ingress Agents Do That Make The General Public Question Our Sanity 🤣
Hey faceplanting is a long honored tradition among Ingress Agents!
