Feature suggestion: "Journal"

So, a while back (June 2019) I made the suggestion to add a tab to the comms that displays a log of the stuff you get out of your hack. For some reason it's now archived... I still hope that somehow this makes it into Ingress!

What I would like to see is a "Hack output journal". Make it a tab on the comms section or whatever, have it list what portal we hacked and when, plus a list of output received from the hack. You can do it with icons only, like the Pokemon Go journal. Highlight bonus items, heck maybe even list the speed bonus for bragging purposes on glyph hacks.

This way, the popup we get after hacking is less important and can be dismissed easy like in Redacted.

It could look something like this:

Sample (quick) of a possible way to display. Icons for kind of hack (Glyph/Key/No key), bonus items listed in yellow in case of glyph and speed bonus displayed for bragging purposes (my personal record for a 5 glyph sequence is 80%!)

EDIT: Like someone commented; it might also be cool to have all the agents actions listed here.

  • Captured portal - x ap
  • Linked portal x and y - x ap
  • Field created - x ap

This way we also get our own actions back with MU captured and AP gained.

I mean, theres nothing wrong with it, doesnt seem too important though as you are shown twice what you hacked, first with the items showing up in the left screen then a literal list after of normal and bonus items you hacked.

I don't know why I (or, anyone) would need that, honestly. What problem does this solve? What task does this accomplish?

Unless this tab also shows my other activities like when I capture portal, when I link something, when I create a field (and MU of that). But even then, the items I mentioned would be far more important than hacks for me, so I'd seek to get hack output logs disabled.

I want a personal AP tab that shows all your ingame actions that gives you AP.

It isn't important. Neither is having the portal photo's everywhere in the comms as little pixelated messes. I thought it would be a nice addition. I've often wondered where that rogue ada came from; this is something that is already implemented in for example Pokemon Go, so I though it wouldn't be too hard to implement it here as well.

It doesn't solve any problem. It's just a feature request. I'd love the idea of having it expanded as an overall personal log, which then also shows all your actions in there; something that I actually miss from the old scanner.

So, based on suggested above, can we transform that to basically a "personal activities which give AP" kind of tab?

If yes then I think each log entry you painted is a bit too wide. Given that there are usually LOTS of hacks people do, and you can place only 5 of them here, it's gonna be a very long log to scroll through. I suggest to make the log entries more condensed instead: little one-line messages like in Redacted, probably with icons. Initially they could contain only very basic info (portal name and pic, action, AP given, icons of hacked items), and they could expand on tap to show more info.

I like this. Great idea. One thing I’d omit are the portal pictures, really. Otherwise; awesome addition. Also like the “tap to expand” idea, this mock-up was made mid 2019, I personally just used the layout that was already there, but I agree, less whitespace, more information.

Took my "Disagree" back. AP actions journal is what I'm missing sometimes too :)

Evolving the idea, each one line item is then:

    • Portal name (pic could still be there for consistency with the rest, but I personally think pics should be removed from comm altogether)
    • Action (recharge, hack, glyph hack, reso deploy (damn that's 8 items per portal already!), mod install, link, field, what else is there)
    • Most important info about the action, namely:
      • For hacks: icons of acquired items, most probably without counts (since they'd be too small)
      • For link: name (and icon?) of portal linked to
      • For field: MU
      • For mod install: icon of deployed mod
      • For beacon/firework deploy: icon of the deployed item
    • AP gained

Tap to expand and more info about some actions (no more info needed on reso deployed actions right?).

Right. Those portal pictures are cropped and compressed into oblivion anyway, better to just remove them from comms everywhere; totally agree. Those resources can then be used for useful stuff.

Awesome write up. I can't think of anything missing; but this is great. I do think in the old 'comms log' you'd see every deployed resonator; maybe something along the lines of: 'Deployed 2 resonators: +750 AP; same thing then for upgraded reso's.

  • This is a nice-to-have that I would like to have as well :D

Grouping of a same portal same action (excluding hacks) log entries, such as reso deploy, upgrade, recharge, or field/link/reso destroy is a nice thing to have, yes. It could be just a bit hard to implement though.

I personally have zero use for this type of feature. Not sure how much you play, but I will do hundreds of hacks a day and couldn't care less what items I get, when and where. If it's useful, it gets used, if its useless, it gets trashed. A journal/log would just be unnecessary clutter and a waste of developer resources. It provides no real quality of life improvement either, other than just simply being a "nice to have" for some players who might look at it a few times and then forget about it.

I know PoGo has one, and I never look at it there either since it is useless.

Not to mention it is very unlikely Niantic are tracking what items are hacked and the glyph bonus percentage, that would be a nightmare for server space to keep all that logged for every agent. The GDPR data shows they log glyph hack points, hacks, portals and times, but not output. So it's likely they would need some massive changes for output to be logged for such a function.

The only benefit I could see is you know when your last hack was to keep your sojourner alive, but even that is somewhat redundant now with the addition of drones.

I don't think it should be even stored on server. I don't think it would even require any changes on server. Just log current play session in the app and throw it away when the app is closed.

But I agree that other than "nice to have", it would be of no use more than 99% of the playtime for me. It could be of some use for novice players to see what exactly gives them AP... Other than that, I believe the devs have more important stuff to work on currently.

Whilst you are probably right on the development resources it would take, I still miss seeing my own actions in the comms. In terms of feature parity, this was never achieved. Seeing how much MU my fields generated is nice with the floating numbers, but I'd like to have an answer ready when my teammates ask me how much MU a layer would yield. We can't see that anywhere, for large fields even getting it to show up on intel comms is tricky.

I still value the input though, that's what this forum is for; brainstorming/discussing these sort of things. :)

@Jo0Lz There are several feature parity things that I miss, and that's one of them. I would put screenshot of stats at the top of my list, though... I used to use that constantly, and I love going back through my old photo archives to see what my stats looked like years ago. Now that's gone.

MU is still shown at comm, you just need to have a short agent name and use short language. Also, you can see it right after making the fields, during the animation. It's a messed up design choice, but still on the game.

About hacked items tab, I'm also in for an AP tab, that is truly missing. And instead of showing every hacked output, show only the VR stuff and AP.

  • mortuusmortuus ✭✭✭✭✭

a tab is good to if u are fielding and want see after all MU u did etc.. i wish we could have this.

  • 1valdis1valdis ✭✭✭✭✭

If you're going to analyze your fielding afterwards, doing that on a PC with Intel logs open is more convenient I think.
