Ideas to improve Ingress...

...stolen borrowed from other games.

Can we at least try to have a organized discussion about ideas to improve our game, but instead of just trowing random ideas, how about speak about features that we already know from other games and adapt it for Ingress. For the sake of organization, let's also try to keep one idea per post, to help in like/disagree process (this will also help the bosses to see which ones are best).

I'm gonna start with daily tasks, from both Pokémon Go and Wizard Unite:

Each one have different ways to do it, and I believe the version from WU would fit better to Ingress. If you don't know, WU have 7 fixed tasks for you to complete each day, that are just basic gameplay things, like walking 250m, visiting a wayspot, capturing x creatures, battling, etc. This could be addapted into Ingress, providing every player some actions to do every day, that will result in some extra AP and gear. I would just change from 7 fixed task, to random ones, from a larger pool of possibilities. This will help players to avoid boredom from the game and help loners to level up faster and colect basic gear.

The version of Pokémon Go is also (you get a new task by visiting a wayspot), but I would change it to not provide tasks on every portal, but in less frequency (like 1 on each z14 cell like the VSCP) and maybe randomize it every day, so the agent would have to search for it. One good thing from Go is the special researches from the events, that are longer and gave better rewards.

This could also introduce a P.A. Chapeau NPC on the game, being part of a investigaion section helping players to discover the lore and mysteries of the game.

Yes if we cant have global events with badge atleast give some tasks etc so ufeel alittle more motivation doing things... portal scan is not what i call much fun really.. iwas hoping these yellow markers would be some drone event or similar :(

many players are bored now that we dont have any real events with no badge etc.. now its winter and cold in many parts of world it would be nice have some other tasks with awards or something to do.. events is something that can draw more people in this game which we need last time i checked but without all those it seems not much is happening sadly.

So let's bring to the table another idea inpired by the other Niantic products: diferent ranks/types of waypoint. All other games have diferent types of "portals" to interact: gyms, fortress, grennhouses, etc. Could Ingress have this too? Well, we just got something like that this week with the VSCP, but those change absolute nothing to the game, since are just scans. Something like real volatile portals, providing advantages like extra link lenght or even more mod slots, or lets dream: more resonator slots.

I can see this "rank2" portals working in two different ways: 1) volatile, chaging every cycle, encouraging players to hunt tham and adapt their strategies and 2) fixed, located on ladmarks, based on the quality of scan data (to give that funcion a purpose).

"Real volatile portals" do nothing but award more points according to some scoring mechanic 😛, which could make for a welcome change 🤔.

It really sounds like you're saying "Ingress is boring and unsustainable. Don't change it".

I agree somethi g needs to be done about cycles, in my area, its enl heavy and they won it for months, we had a wee run of winning it, and it just didn't seem worth the effort, its not even like its bragging rights, its more "you spent more time doing something, congrats", there needs to be some reward for winning g while also an incentive for the losing team to attempt to win it next time, ingress wonder how to get older players back, thats an instant way of doi g it

Check out my proposal in another thread for determining the winner of a cell based on a delta from the previous cycle's score. That takes away the advantage of dominance since standing/recurring fields don't help you anymore.

    • Make only the topmost layer count for score, but allow people to make new fields under it (for zero scoring value).

That way there's still a benefit for making and removing big fields, but players who can't (or won't) take down big fields can still play generally. It also removes the unnatural bonus for making lots of layers. Lorewise, you can't capture the same mind twice. Game-wise, the effort for the second and subsequent layers is far lower when you've already got the first layer down, holding a baseline and preventing the majority of blockers.

  • @grendelwulf :

I'd like to see an AI character assigning not so random random tasks that have a countdown.

The danger of these is people getting disgruntled if it selects an impossible portal or task. Better to have something like "Capture X different portals" or "Make X links". Choosing a specific portal is fraught with issues.

Not enough people by CMU as it is. Gotta fix the cashflow problems first.

Make fields anchored at Volatiles with Count Controller worth x1.3 mu.

  • grendelwulfgrendelwulf ✭✭✭✭✭

I had this idea for a Grid Booster that would drop a Tron-Looking S2 Level 17 or 16 cell grid on your scanner and for 30 minutes allow you to interact with any portal in the same cell as you regardless of how far away it is.

This might have been a good idea in the height of the game - 2015-2016 era - but not now. At that time, our local community was basically self-organized into sub-communities that were close in size to your smaller cells (even smaller in some cases) but over time as there are fewer active agents, our community truly spans the entire cell, and people will travel from one edge to the other just to help each other out. With a smaller cell, there would be a lot less teamwork and encouragement.

Already suggested this, but wasn't popular, thinking about a lot more since, and it makes the most sense.

    - For Septicycles, start at 0MU and only count new fields created in that week.

    - However maybe, award the top 3 players that contributed the most MU that week with a new tally (badge)

    - In the same graph, show lines that shows the total MU for the region between each faction.

I am fortunate enough to be in a city where we don't have BAFs all the time. However I feel for players that do play under permaBAFs, IMO, the above suggestion would hell with this.

Ie the Septicycle scoring no longer is calculated from standing fields, and standing fields would become more of point of interest but part of the global score is awards the faction that fortnight/month with a prize which gained the most MU globally.

Go back to the roots of Ingress, which is referred to as more of a capture the flag type game.

    ???

After 8 years of playing, can confidently say that it has nothing to do with that gameplay style. However it is similar to the board game GO/Stones, and Risk.

Story and meaningful dynamic changes to the game map from the Shard Game, to pre event fielding Ops, are still required.

I'd like to see one faction attempt to "BAF the planet" the Enlightened got close with doing the Northern Hemisphere,.

That's pretty close to what I proposed in this thread, which is that the end of the previous cycle sets the baseline for both factions, and the winner of the next cycle is the one who gains more/loses less from the last cycle. That neutralizes the advantage of standing fields and significantly reduces the advantage of having a higher nose count. It gives the underdog faction an incentive to compete, and even gives causal players the opportunity to make a contribution-- all they really need to do is throw a few fields before a checkpoint, or take down a couple of the other faction's fields and they've done something that will benefit the team for that cycle.

Just another post where cheaters are not a problem to solve.

Whatever change may be applied, cheaters will just find the way to get it and the game will just get to the same situation. It is sch an obvious thing that it seems you are all passing over it on purpose!

We need random mini-events that can appear here and there. If we do not have the opportunity to conduct a large anomaly, then let there be many anomalies and they will be small. But let them also affect the gameplay and the plot of the game. Why not? You also need to do something that would make the players go to places far from the portals. This will expand the portal network and make it possible to play where there are no portals at all.

yes, and its shame battle beacons dont work remote in times like this... i never see one deployed in my region.. and now its cold and dark many parts of world i doubt battle beacons will serve much function until first saturdays stop be virtual im sure it will be a thing to play there but for everyday gameplay i dont see it being used much really.. and we have drones why they dont do some mini games with that and even award badge ? safe for everyone no matter where u are... covid will last a while so i mean they cant just wait to host normal anomalies again will be a long wait sadly..

  • HydracyanHydracyan ✭✭✭✭✭

It's always cold or dark in some part of the world. That's how days and seasons work.

The battle Beacon could work better if they were like the pokemon raids, appearing randomly at the map with a timer.
