Portal Scanning. Am I doing this right?

I got 46 Scout Controller s today and at least 30 were exactly like this.

I got a few **** silly looks like what are you doing, but it wasn't too bad. It was raining and not crowded.

I mean, it literally says to slowly walk around the object. But, on the other hand, that’s more or less the way I’ve interpreted their need for these scans, especially ones like that...

  • @grendelwulf I think the idea is to walk around it slowly, but with 2D objects like these it's very difficult to say. I would scan those stolpersteine only once or twice (once walking around it angling 45 degrees so you see the horizon, then again with a few steps back to widen the circle) then move on to better scannable portals.

I think that portal scans are there for the system to 'learn' 3D objects in the world so future games can interact with them (for example: dropped items hiding behind them, or game characters 'taking cover' behind them). I don't know if a 2D object like that is ever going to yield great results for that purpose. But, maybe they're after the surroundings as well, I don't know.

  • Excerpt from help section:

"Flat Portals (murals; memorial plaques; signage; etc.): Face the Portal and walk laterally from one side to the other. If the Portal itself is small, like a memorial plaque on a bench, please scan the entire bench versus the memorial plaque only."

So many portals don't exist anymore, so I can't scan them. I have now decided that I am going to scan the place where the portal is supposed to be, and get the credit, and then report them as invalid. Inevitably, I get the email that the portal will remain in the network. I just got one this morning, for a sculpture that was torn down.

I recently went to a local park, and a good 40% of the portals weren't there, or were misplaced. Signs and temporary sculptures and the like. It's a shame too, because many of the things had been replaced with new and different things that would be portal worthy, but have no hope of coming online, in any game.

Another example, I went to a town that used to have interesting and decorative benches, but the town removed them all, and replaced them with glossy black new benches, and moved them into different places. I can't scan the cool decorative benches, and the new, plain benches aren't in the same place.

It won't change anything, but at least I can get the badges.
