Almost 5 Dollar/ Euro for a "Battle Beacon"??? Do you ever cosider that people worldwide dont have that much to waste for your game? Its just weird how you act. Why not make it a " 1 Dollar / Euro" and sell them a lot, instead now only sell one and see sales dropping to zero after everybody tried it once.
You gotta start high in case there's an anomaly abuse problem they haven't noticed yet. In my ideal world, Battle Beacons are turned off in the playbox during anomalies (including a ten hour window before the anomaly starts, to allow for optimal virus strategies), but I don't know if they have that tech. I'd be happy if they could turn it off globally, actually.
I'm with others, the cost vs winnings ratio seems a little off. That price for boosted hacks and a beacon?
I could see this being kinda fun at a First Saturday event or something where agents are gathered.
That being said, I'm happy there is something new being added to the game and perhaps, if I can find a way to use these outside of events, I might buy one here and there, just knowing it might support the game and keep it alive for a little longer. The more money being dumped into Ingress means more development, right....?
The ONLY time I can envision seeing this used is after a First Saturday restaurant meetup. Even then, I don't see people burning gear when we could build a xfac P8 farm instead.
Actually, the one thing I -can- see this being used for is trolling after-hours anchors when scores are close. Guaranteed flips overnight, dropping links. Two agents fight at a portal until its closing time, the losing player drops the battle beacon on the way out so the other team can't own the anchor after-hours.
Or a single player trying to get an OP off the ground rotating these to drop links at checkpoints to clear lanes without help while they throw.
Really not impressed with the final result. I can't imagine given the shrinking playerbase and high price they'll ever recoup the cost of the hours it took to create the feature as real issues like spoofing and stale fields destroy the game.
Thinking on it, I could see this used by Niantic to show off what it does.
Say that one day (maybe for the anniversary) there’s a blip in the XM or whatever lore reason you want to give, and every portal worldwide has a Battle Beacon activated at a certain time and agents can then utilise them, and maybe they get a small CMU gift towards being able to get their own one if they win.
And Niantic takes one more step toward trying to turn Ingress into Pokemon go - very sad. We HAD a way to battle the other faction for portals - recharge wars - till alerts got so messed up that we frequently didn't hear them till an hour after the portal had been attacked.
I've read the description and I'm asking myself what I could possibly need this for - unless its sole purpose is to actually be a massive pay-to-win Flipcard...?
Extreme high CMU for Battle Beacon now. Please fix mutch cheeper price and give us 1 free every day. In Pokémon GO we get 1 free Battle Pass every day. For me no buy i spend more time on hack more. In Pokémon GO we can buy it for free when we earn free Pokémon money and mutch lower price if we have 0 Pokémon money. Time to look on Pokémon Go and under 5000 CMU is very bad and to high Price. @NianticBrian
a) Not the time given we're still being encouraged to stay home and not gather. A battle beacon is basically a volatile battle and that encourages people to come together.
b) This isn't a replacement for an anomaly or even a 'mini-anomaly' since its only one portal and fixed flips.
IMO it would have been more worthwhile spending more development resources on making the client more playable, and creating some of the server elements that make people play more, like showing Uniques.
Imagine if they actually showed us what we hadn't ever captured/visited before. People would be able to go out into sparse areas, play safely socially distanced, and track down all those Uniques...
No, I would rather not have them give out free Flipcards every day. Especially not those that ignore immunity. I would honestly prefer not have them in the game at all.
Definitely still wish we could see our explored uniques as perringaiden suggested, but I can guarantee that people will buy these and enjoy them. Communities can use them for their own events.
There will of course be troll usage and other utility for them but I'm sure there is a market of players who will enjoy them as intended.
The biggest problem I have with this feature is the pay-to-win potential. Instead of deciding whether to use a naturally scarce item to flip a strategic portal, or use a lot of gear to try to neutralize something heavily guarded, you can now pay a few dollars to flip whatever you want with no consequences. The only way to prevent this is to use another beacon on the portal to take up the beacon slot, which turns what was previously a fun cosmetic effect into potential metagaming.
If battles could only be started on neutral portals, I'd be fine with them. But even then, I still wouldn't be interested due to the relatively high price for little return, and the lack of free CMU. If I wanted to pay for more items, I'd buy a fracker pack. If I want competition, I'll go help my team in the MU cycle.
edit: One other thought I had is this feature is worthless for rural players, and players with few or no local agents on the opposing faction.
If they'd reward our portal scans, our accepted portal nominations and all our efforts to maintain and improve the playing field with CMU, then this would be acceptable. Now it's not. This is burning your money.
More agents on telegram say 5000 CMU is a joke from Niantic and extreme high price. I hope Niantic listen and relese mutch cheaper price soon. Please help us! @NianticBrian
Niantic are not coming up with ideas to make money that ingress players would want. do we want battle beacons that would flip a portal every 3 minutes...no, do we want pay to win...no, and if the beacons are the answer to an athome anomaly type of play, they did not get it right. what we want is to go back to a faction vs faction war in my opinion.
What will happen next? Remote viewing in which you can see dancing green or blue pikachu around the portals of your faction? Or a paid regular shield that launches a faction symbol over the portal? Or an ultrastrike that will **** fireworks on impact ???
@spicyheart can you share what specifically you'd like to see with going back to a Faction vs Faction war? Do you mean an Anomaly? We currently put Anomalies on hold for 2020, but our team is working out how might we update how live, in-person events could work in 2021.
If an uncontested beacon isn't significantly better than a fracker, then you can guarantee a 'win' by simply ignoring enemy beacons, resulting in the enemy having paid 5k for something with less than 5k value.
i realize that anomalies are on hold and rightfully so during this time. but maybe a global mu, portal control, shards are just some ideas off the top of my head and i am sure that others can come up with more. i know that at this time is not good to have the events, but the planning can be started. We are losing players which is very sad. when this is over, we need a large global event that will bring everyone back out playing and include everyone, not just a few agents.
Also, i have not looked at the store lately, but smaller items that do not cost much individually that can be given out as prizes at events or meetups. keyrings, lanyards, badges, etc which can be bought and produced in bulk from a supplier for pennies. A lot miss the physical anomaly packs.

The CMU cost seems very steep given that there’s no way to earn the premium currency like you can in other Niantic games.

Pretty incomprehensible, no idea what the rewards are, looks quite like win-trading, expensive and I need 4m more XP before I can do it.
... so that's a no from me.

better get a subscription system up and let us pay for more inventory space

I'll just wait for the Battle Beacon Badge then you can have my money. 🥱🥱🥱

I would like to point out that Ingress is not Pokemon Go. Hopefully, Niantic reads this, too.
Please stop comparing everything in Ingress to Pokemon Go. I play this game EXACTLY because it is not similar to Pokemon Go. Thanks.
But 5000 CMU is a joke for 1 Battle Beacon. I hope Niantic fix mutch cheaper price and give us 1 free every time we use 1 Battle Beacon.

Golden words my friend, that's what I thought!

We need to know exactly what the rewards are.
If an uncontested beacon isn't significantly better than a fracker, then you can guarantee a 'win' by simply ignoring enemy beacons, resulting in the enemy having paid 5k for something with less than 5k value.
We want global challenges back Brian.
Also battle beacons should have a badge based on number of battles similar to how First Saturday badge works.
i realize that anomalies are on hold and rightfully so during this time. but maybe a global mu, portal control, shards are just some ideas off the top of my head and i am sure that others can come up with more. i know that at this time is not good to have the events, but the planning can be started. i am available to discuss this further anytime.
I mentioned about having badges available from profile which would be great - https://community.ingress.com/en/discussion/11959/physical-medals-badges#latest
Smaller items being offered would be nice too.
Yes, we want global challenges back... Maybe with drone or so...
