UCR & ChiENL Joint Statement on Black Lives Matter
The United Chicagoland Resistance and the Chicago Enlightened are welcoming communities open to all Ingress agents. Since their founding, ChiENL and UCR have typically maintained a neutral stance on civic debates.
ChiENL and UCR can no longer remain neutral. Today, we cannot remain silent.
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd's life was crushed from him slowly over the course of nine agonizing minutes as he pleaded for breath. The people who took his life were members of law enforcement. This was an execution with neither judge nor jury. These gruesome moments were captured on video and the injustice was broadcast for the world to see.
In the days since, many cities in the United States and around the world have been roiled by protests, mostly peaceful. Some of these peaceful protests have unfortunately become preyed upon by exploiters and instigators. Protestors are not necessarily rioters and rioters are not necessarily looters. Regardless of riots or looting, the injustice remains the same. The brutal dea th is not undone. As Martin Luther King, Jr., observed in 1967, "In a real sense our nation’s summers of riots are caused by our nation’s winters of delay. And as long as America postpones justice, we stand in the position of having these recurrences of violence and riots over and over again. Social justice and progress are the absolute guarantors of riot prevention."
What happened to George Floyd is nothing new. People of color are being brutalized and killed by law enforcement or vigilantes on thin or fabricated suspicion. Ahmaud Arbery went for a jog and was killed. Breonna Taylor slept in her bed and was killed. There are far too many to name over far too many years. Their lives matter. Black lives matter.
Together we stand united against injustice.
