We always appreciate and welcome your honest feedback, both the good and the bad. Sometimes making changes can lead to better experience for many, and we recognized that potential for this event. We’d like to share the new event medal distribution as below:

Perpetua medal: earned by completing all six challenges

Perpetua Elite medal: earned by completing all six challenges and placing in the top 10% in their city for any of the challenges

Your scanner will only display one medal. For example, if you are an elite performer, to view your Perpetua medal you will need to tap on the Perpetua Elite medal on your Agent scanner

If you did not earn the Perpetua Elite medal, your scanner will only display the Perpetua medal and the Elite medal will remain locked.

The Field Test: Hexathlon medals will be removed from this event and remain as a commemorative medal for participating in the Field Test. This will also apply to the Lexicon Hexathlon event on April 25th.

Each city will have their own leaderboard; be sure to register for the event to stay informed with the latest details.

Hello!!

Due to all this strange situation that we are experiencing, all the events that were planned have had to be canceled, but we have been able to participate in the Ingres First Saturdays from home virtually. I want to explain an idea so we can do the same with the Hexathlon or be part of a bigger idea for an anomaly.

I have called it Virtual Hexathlon.

It would all start with different registration websites for cities with Virtual Hexathlon. Each agent could only join one of them.

The day of the event, an email with an encrypted code that must be resolved and redeemed (one use only) is sent to registered agents. This code would give you a key to the Virtual Hexathlon registration portal. This key could not be shared and could disappear from inventory once the event is over.

Once the key is obtained, you can access the portal remotely. Then you could recharge the portal (if it's claimed by your faction) and hack it always with glyphs. In this way, the registration of the agents who are actually participating is obtained, either through the redeemable code or the hacking of the registration portal.

From then on, you would focus on Hexathlon objectives that would be to recharge portals, hack portals, make glyphs, get media collections and solve puzzles.

For this, it is not necessary to leave home, it would be enough to use the keys of the portals. When accessing the portals remotely, it would give you the option to recharge and hack with glyphs. In this way statistics of hacks, well-made glyphs or even series of well-made glyphs are obtained.

As a result of these hacks, they will give you cubes to recharge and different media. Some media are to get points for having the entire collection, that is, get the 6 media with a triangle shape of different colors, or the 6 media with different shapes but of the same color, or artifacts or whatever you can think of. And other media, are codes to decipher and redeemable. In this way you could have statistics of the complete collections and the resolved codes.

Also related to the first code to resolve, which is the one that gives you the key to the registration portal, it could be done that when 80% of the agents registered on the web have solved and redeemed it, a second email is sent with a more complicated puzzle to obtain a higher level decoding ranking.

I hope it would be an interesting proposal and be taken into account to organize Virtual Hexathlon.

Alvaro

@NianticOfficial @NianticBrian @NianticChiaki

Almost everyone I know and in local groups about upcoming hexathlons thing the Elite badge is worse than the basic one.

For Perpetua especially it looks like they didn't even planed it to be a dual (since they mistakenly post the old field test one), like if perpetua was meant to be an anomaly but then changed to hexatlhon and so they just swaped its colors.

The first field test medal was debateable, but the basic perpetua is way better looking than the Elite version, and if this style continue he whole hexatlhon point is going to fail, since people will just lack the will for compete for a worse version of the badge. You should either choose between a good looking badge or the elite status? In my opinion the Elite version should be the better looking, and the basic the bland one.

I attended the Hexathalon in Tijuana. Fortunately, this event was close to where I live, so I was able to easily attend this event. Here are my thoughts on the 90 min event and some of the obstacles that I had.

1. I played the event, much like a Ingress First Saturday. I was just looking for AP, and ended up getting elite, accidentally. This was a problem for me, since the badge was not as attractive as the standard badge. I should have researched this ahead of time.

Solution: I would prefer a tiered badge for this event. Something like "wings" to indicate an elite award could be added to the badge.

2. I had trouble keeping track of the score board. I didn't check until near the end of the event and had only 10 min to finish my glyph points. I know of at least one agent who didn't get the badge, because their criteria was not met and they couldn't find the score board during the event.

Solution: It would be nice if this would be tracked in our current stats or have a more intuitive link in the App or events tab.

3. For IFS, we get double AP. It seems logical that we could receive double AP for an event that we (might) need to travel further for.

Solution: Award double AP

4. It would have been convenient to have Mission Day on the same day as the Hexathalon, since the Hexathalon is only 90 minutes. There was plenty of time to do Missions for Mission Day on the day of the Hexathalon. I probably would have done them during the Hexathalon, since the Hexathalon wasn't very challenging.

Solution: Have Mission Day on the same day as the Hexathalon

5. I did purchase the character codes separately, so I could hack for media. However, I didn't purchase the last one, until after the Hexathalon badge pushed, so I don't like the lineup in my scanner. I didn't know the Hexathalon badge would be pushed that quickly.

Solution: warn people! Next time, I will complete my full purchase, before the end of the event.

5. It was nice to see friends, but because of no formal organizing committee, I didn't get a chance to talk with everyone that I wanted to talk to, because some people didn't attend the after-party events.

Solution: Niantic could organize better with locals, such as distributing a local Telegram chat with the event details.

6. Finally, I don't see any reason to hold a Hexathalon. It really is IFS with glorified stats. To be successful, I believe an event that is in-between a IFS and Anomalies need to be better defined and in a different category. For instance, maybe it could be a scavenger hunt, similar to clear field, so we could create mini-teams. Clear Field was an awesome event. I would have done more of them, if it had been a tiered event badge. Not only were they fun and dynamic, but they provided great media exposure for GORUCK and Niantic, because it was part of the score. Hexathalon could have some simple decoding from media hacks, posting pictures by the portal or create a link/field/starburst from a highlighted portal. A scavenger hunt could bring people to work together towards a common goal, which I feel makes Ingress unique, because of the team aspect of play.

Solution: Style the event after a scavenger hunt.

As it stands, the only reason I might attend the next Hexathalon, is to do the Mission Day, see some friends, and get a gold badge. Aim low, my friends!

@NianticBrian

Dear Niantic!

My Ingress name iAndriiK. I'm play many years, and this time visited Hexatlon in Bratislava, Slovakia. I was pretty upset that what eas detained as backlight of start portal and as backlight of media portals more that 40 minutes.

So that I didn't make it in a timely matter and arrival to one out of several media portals that were around start portal. When I saw ornaments of media portal, at once ran there, but when came running and hack this portal, it was late. But all the rest tasks was finished on 100 procents.

Only then I knew that there were other agents who didn't have time to get media elements on a special portal too.

Please review the event policy for timely backlight of portals and take actions to resolve the issue. If possible, add a medal to my profile.

If we don't tell Niantic what we like, in addition to what we dislike, they don't know what to focus on for the future.

I'll start: I like that Hexathalons won't require a central command structure for each Faction. Anomalies have been very hit-or-miss for me based on how organized Dispatch is. I'm looking forward to being able to identify objectives and plan tactics more quickly and flexibly.

Two things stand out in this screen capture:

1. Whoever laid out this page didn't stop to think that maybe, just maybe, important white text becomes illegible when viewed against the white portion of a background image.

2. Whoever laid out this page didn't stop to think that maybe, just maybe, it might be nice in Hexathlon conditions with heavily overloaded mobile networks, and intense device use to have a fast cleanly loading page without superfluous graphical elements taking up network bandwidth and device processing capability. Several times I went to this page and the background jerked and stammered and tiled awkwardly a few times before settling down, even though I took the precaution of closing all browser tabs except Hexathlon results and all apps except scanner and Chrome.

The Hexathlon was fun and cool and Ingress mostly worked. But the realtime presentation of results, while accurate and useful, was significantly marred by Niantic design choices and communication lapses.

Device: Pixel 2XL with current Android. 100% screen brightness, as that's what it takes to make Ingress playable in bright sunlight.

Network: AT&T unthrottled.

Browser: current Chrome

I just returned from a 1,200 mile trip to attend the Perpetua Hexathlon in Salt Lake City, Utah. As a fairly active player who has begun traveling for Ingress events in the last 18 months, and who has helped on orga/POC for local events (First Saturday/Mission Day), I would like to share some quick thoughts and concerns.

As many players, I’m beginning to miss the team-based competitive nature of Ingress, but I was intrigued enough to travel for this event. Overall, I enjoyed the event for what it was (NOT as a replacement for anomalies). I had no issues with lag/server errors, and the shorter 90min format gave me a sense of urgency to complete the tasks I had intended to accomplish to achieve Elite status. In that regard, well done Niantic!

My main concern arises from the layout of the media portals, which more-or-less designated the playbox. After observing several Field Test sites on intel back in Sept, I found that nearly all media portals showed up within a ~575m radius of the registration portal, with all portals falling on the edge of the circle if possible. Throughout the Perpetua Hexathlon, I observed this same behavior in the APAC and EMEA regions as I prepped for my time in Salt Lake City (attached image below is from Perpetua Hexathlon in Porto, Portugal [yellow star=registration portal; blue ornaments=media portals]).

I found this concerning because our registration portal was at the entrance to a large beautiful park, next to a busy road, and just across that busy road from a large hospital. If this pattern followed suit, half of the portal-dense park would not be included in the media portal ring (not a huge deal), but worse, several media portals would show up in the much less portal dense hospital complex, drawing players across a busy road and into a zone to potentially interfere with emergency services. This is in fact what happened. Three media portals showed up in the hospital complex and two more at the far end of a large parking lot of a nearby busy shopping complex with only two media portals in/near the park.

Thoughts/Conclusions:

Again, I really enjoyed the gameplay aspect of this event and am impressed with how stable Prime was during this event compared to even 6 months ago (though I heard other sites struggled with stability). However, in my opinion, the layout of the media portals was unacceptable. I really don’t mind them being spread out, in fact I enjoy having to cover a lot of ground to accomplish a strategic goal, but not near a busy hospital! This shows me that Niantic is relying on an algorithm to set the media portals and not actually looking at the map themselves. This could have been easily avoided if they set a few locals as event POCs who’s only job was to advise on the ‘playbox’ and point out potential hazards or places to watch out for (like the nearby hospital). Even without POCs, Niantic could have looked at the ‘playbox’ themselves, but I don’t think even that happened.

The past is in the past, but this leaves me concerned for the Lexicon Hexathlon in April and frightened for what can happen in Munich in May.

Agents,

We are aware that this announcement was released on another social channel earlier today. Below you’ll find the most up to date and accurate information. We apologize for the confusion.

We’d like to share confirmed details regarding the upcoming Perpetua Hexathlon on Saturday, February 29th.

You will have 30 minutes to hack the check-in portal to receive your instructions, followed by 90 minutes to complete six individual challenges. Agents who complete all six challenges will receive the Perpetua medal; those who complete the Hexathlon and place in the top 10% in their city for any challenge will also receive the Elite version of the Hexathlon medal. Additionally, any Agents who have earned an Elite Hexathlon medal from the previous Field Test event but do not reach Elite at the Perpetua Hexathlon, your scanner will maintain its Elite medal.

Registration through the in-app ticketing system will open next Thursday, January 16th 9AM PST. Registration will not be limited by site, meaning tickets will not run out.

All sites will be run in local time, using the following schedule:

2020-02-29 13:30: Check-in portal active

2020-02-29 14:00: Check-in portal inactive

2020-02-29 14:00: Hexathlon starts

2020-02-29 15:30: Hexathlon ends

Afterwards: up to your local community!

Individual Challenges:

Collect at least 6 Media Artifacts

Make at least 36 successful portal hacks

Deploy at least 30 Resonators

Deploy at least 12 Mods

Gain at least 30 Glyph Points

Destroy at least 6 Resonators

We will also be adding new researcher character medals and Digital Readiness Kits for purchase. These will include new medal versions of the Osiris universe researchers Hank Johnson, Yuri Nagassa, and Roland Jarvis. We will announce the availability of the Digital Readiness Kits when they are added to the in-app store.

While the gameplay is similar to the Field Test from September 2019, this event is a Hexathlon, a new type of event developed through Field Test experimentation. Hexathlon will remain as a competitive event focused on individual achievement, while Field Test will continue testing new gaming mechanics which may potentially evolve into new events, just like Hexathlon.

While Hexathlon events do not have a physical venue, Agents are encouraged to organize community meet-ups and share photos using the #Ingress and #PerpetuaHexathlon hashtags.

We currently do not have plans to have additional events, such as GORUCK, OCF, or OPR Live. However, we will prioritize any applications for Mission Days for these cities to make it a fun-filled weekend.

We will continue to release information about this event as details are confirmed. We appreciate your patience and hope you are looking forward to these events!

In the 2020 Event Schedule post it was said:

We plan to release the February Perpetua Hexathlon cities next week. All of these events will have free onsite and offsite participation tickets with medals awarded for ticketed participants.

With the details posted, we don't see that option for offsite participation. However, this is my idea on how you could implement a simple offsite "participation option" for future events.

1. Offsite Ticket

Offsite participants could have a paid ticket for the event, say $5 (adjusted for local prices, use the Big Mac Index), which grants them access to the offsite participation.

2. Offsite Medal

Like the Elite medal is a higher tier of the normal Perpetua medal, offsite participants would get a "lower" tier of the medal for offsite participation. For example, the Perpetua medal could be all white with black trace lines. It would be clearly not the onsite medal itself, but would be something that can still be displayed.

3. Minimum Requirements

Instead of actually competing for elite badges etc, the offsite participation could just be a set of minimum requirements to complete within the 2 hours like:

Hack 50 unique portals

Gain 100 glyph points

Make 40 links

Make 20 fields

4. Global Leaderboard

Probably only updated once at the end, but you could provide a global leaderboard for all participating Agents (on- and off- site) that ranks everyone who paid for a ticket.

The Hexathlons can still have central "event locations" but given the comments of many who don't consider it worth attending for the event, having an offsite participation medal would provide a far more tangible and monetized way of allowing more inclusion for players.
