If that was account sharing I'm pretty sure a lot more agents would be affected.
Also, fully agree on the "manual review" part, very hard to believe, specially when they don't even provide an amount of accounts banned.
Why not announcing the ban wave instead?
"Dear agents, whe did some magic stuff and therefore you may see some wizards and witches burn in the following week."
"Dear agents, we are happy to share that a total of [insert rough number here] have successfully burned down to ashes and these lands are a bit less cluttered with dark magic."
And that's it, no need to give full details!
IUENG is supposed to be faction-less. Good job making it a RES-ENL thing. So, even you can even ask nicely and get Enlightened Today an interview. But clearly, being nice is not your strength. Maybe ask someone else to do it and you have a chance.
The change seemed to go live as I was outside scanning portals, so I immediately noticed the differences.
The badge tier reduction from 15k to 12k is a good start, but it's still a ridiculously high amount. This has been discussed in great detail in previous discussions. The jump from gold (1k) to platinum (5k) is extreme and is demoralising to continue conducting unique scans.
The 15 second minimum for scans feels far too long. I can walk around a simple sign in less than 10 seconds, a tiny little plaque flat on the ground can be scanned in 2 seconds, a mural higher up on a wall is difficult to scan as you can't really maneuver around to get anything more than what is essentially a flat 2d image. So you end up waiting for the 15 seconds to timeout before you can move on.
The average portal scan being 14.3 seconds is probably because most people performing the scan didn't seem to realise that they could press the button to stop the scan, rather than waiting for the timer to finish. So changing it based on this average seems silly, why not change it to what would be realistically suitable? Maybe 5-10 seconds
The removal of the encoding is amazing, I don't have to waste time waiting for it to encode anymore. However I am nervous about losing the scans now because I don't know what has happened to them. Can I switch off the phone or change apps as soon as the scan is done, should we wait? No idea.
Portal scans renewing after 7 days I don't like. 200 each fornight worked out pretty well as a moderate and reasonable amount of scans to perform. I could average 15-20 a day and not have to waste too much time performing this free labor with no reward. Now that I could do 30 a day (200 a week), it's a much more daunting number if I am wanting to simply capture unique scout controller points, as it's a lot of effort in finding 30 uniques a day, every day. Having it spaced out over a fortnight ensured that I could have a few days off from scanning and not have to suffer from scanning fatigue by doing it too much. On the other hand, having more scans will make it easier for people to perform more scans.
On the whole, I've enjoyed scanning portals. I've spent more time exploring and finding each portal, updating photos and descriptions. The key issues are still prevalent; ridiculous badge tier, 15 second minimum video and bugs. It would be nice to have an AP reward or something as it requires a huge amount of effort and time when compared to other actions (linking, fielding, smashing, etc.). Ultimately we (the players) know the results of scanning is going to be useless, nobody likes AR features, it's just a novelty for a few seconds before it gets ignored (see PoGo buddies, photos, or HPWU foundable catching or portmanteau opening).
You wanted link amps and frackers for the reception, right?
No, surely the fact the portals alive and linked is a good reason for the opposite faction to go visit and "fix" it?
If the portal is actually inaccessible, then perhaps do an appeal as to why this should be removed.
A large part of our play here revolves around difficult to get to portals.
Fair point. I'll rectify that.
I'm getting married October 3rd. This situation is sufficiently messed up that I'll voluntarily close my account at that point.
I have no desire to play a game where players I have complete confidence are about as legit as it gets are arbitrarily banned, with a review process consisting of 5-10 minute auto ticket closes. I'll use the time to get some memories and a write-up together for our local community. I've got some Darsana and Shonin photos to dig up.
I agree with thesolo. The IUENG "interview" is censored from the start with questions regarding addressing cheating already disallowed.
We will end up with Q&A very similar to before with requests for lasagna recipes or hints about useless new badges. (Don't get me wrong, I love a new badge, but when your player base is dwindling due to rampant cheating it's the least of our concerns).
The player base is starved for material from Niantic and always has been. Krug's AMAs were a good move, however the feedback from Niantic still always lacked any real meat and SoonTM became a byword for the company.
The amount of spoofing going on at the moment is just soul crushing. Recently had island portals spoofed then reset so often I didn't even need to charge them.
How about some statement, anything, on whether Niantic are working on addressing GPS spoofing. At all, anything? Come on people. I don't want any technical info that may help cheats, a simple Yes or No would suffice.
This is the #1 question IUENG should be asking. By avoiding this topic completely, IUENG are just promoting the status quo.
You can ask anything as long as you're not expecting an answer :)
Andrew Krug's AMA may not be perfect but they usually contain good information. Kind of miss it.
The TR's and VG's are doing their best to help us out, but restoring strategic portals for ENL and RES should IMHO be a speedier process, so that spoofing does not pay off anymore.
The fact that portal resets are an option now is a substantial improvement over the situation several years ago. Still, I agree that there remains room for improvement.
When a spoofer destroys a portal and the links anchored there, the game board now has empty space where there used to be none. What are agents to do?
I can put in a chat, "please don't link across these voids," but I can't ever be certain that the message makes it out to everyone in time, or that someone won't accidentally (or "accidentally") YOLO a link. This is a problem because portal resets obey the normal rules of Ingress (e.g., no crossed links) and will not destroy links created by legitimate agents in order to clear space for links that need resetting. The more time passes, the more likely it is that newly created links will get in the way of the reset.
The "obvious" solution is to make the portal resets proceed far more quickly than they do currently.
I believe it is also worth seriously considering whether portal resets should ignore or destroy links created by legitimate agents in order to restore links. When Faction A sees their links spoofed down, and then Faction B takes advantage of the situation, inadvertently or not, to make strategic links that impede the reset… well, it's easy to feel that this makes a mockery of the entire purpose of portal resets, and that it's a waste of everyone's time who put together the information for the reset in the first place.
N.B. This is all based on recent, personal experience.
@NianticBrian likely doesn't have the time to do them at the same scale and frequency.
It would be nice to have an Ingress Community Manager again.
